I have been reading all the pipe posts for a couple of days. I have come down to eather a FMF Fatty or a ESR ATC5 pipe for my all stock 85 250R. I generally ride around the farm (gravel roads, pasture riding, trees, drag racing buddys). The only problem is we also go ride in the sand so I don't want to have no top end. From the posts I have read these two pipes seem to fit may application the best. Any suggestions? Anyone owned both? What are the other mods needed at the same time. What about silencers? Any make a big difference? Could you still run the stock one till a person decides? I am not too worried about loud ( had a cobra on my 200x).

Either pipe would be a good choice and unless you buy something used, those are the only two that I'm aware of that you can still buy new. I run an FMF and am happy with it but have heard the ESR is better. As for silencers, using the same brand as the pipe would be your best bet. In addition to the pipe, you might also want to add aftermarket reeds, a new air filter with no air box lid and re-jet your carb accordingly.

I have looked at Paul Turners too but didn't like they way it said: "Power Curve:Great low-end response and a solid midrange pull. Top end power is similiar to stock. Provides the most bottom power of any pipe on the market today." Bottomend is great but I want more of a mid to upper pipe. Plus they cost a lot more at least for chrome. I am not really a chrome lover but I think they look bitchen on a R.

most post that i have read said they love the esr pipes. that they give a pretty big boost on low mid and top end and that the FMF are just low and mid pipes and that they fall flat on top end

The Paul Turner pipe for the ATC should be the Hi Rev series. The hi rev pipe would be more of a mid to top end pipe.

They web site is http://www.duncanracing.com
They list 2 pipes a type 6 ( the earlier quote) and the high rev
I have heard guys with the high rev that didn't like the way they acted in the trees and trails having to maintain a lower gear to keep in the band.

I have a Paul Turner Hi rev on my 1985 ATC250R and it is awesome! I have no problem on the trails and I am running a 14 tooth front sprocket and it handles tight trails well. I also have a Duncan Powerhead on it as well. It is the best pipe I have had and totally blows away the FMF by a mile! I have the FMF on my 86 and it works ok and the FMF pipe was on my 85 before the Paul Turner and there is no comparison at all.

I was riding today trying to evaluate my riding type. So first is some low speed crusing, some drag racing, some slow trail riding and some aggressive trail riding. Some of this was in 1st gear, others at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle. So do you think the turner would work better? What about the low end? Compared to stock how is it?

go fmf, paul turner is a dune pipe basically i dont own one but thats wat i have heard, iam saving up for one cause thats wat i think i need for my R. i have a fmf pipe and silencer and it gives good overall performance, also i have heard ALOT of good things about the ESR pipe also. The esr is another all around pipe basically like a better fmf pipe. Go ESR if * got 220 if * dont, then pick up a FMF pipe and selencer off ebay

Ive had esr and fmf- ESR is way better all around, and sounds better. Check out their silencer too. FMF sucks!

Your choice is pretty limited now. I ordered an FMF pipe in JANUARY and it was still on backorder until yesterday, when I cancelled the order. It seems pretty much the entire stock of FMF pipes has sold, and FMF needs to make more. They were supposed to be done by Feb. 2nd, but they led me on until yesterday, when I realized I just can't take it anymore  If you can find an FMF pipe, they are going for $190.00!!! Way too much for FMF. ESR is only $220.00. Your $30.00 is well spent, and you will actually receive your product this year!!!

One thing to consider with the silcencer: The FMF turbine core has a sparky built inside. If your local riding area requires one, it saves you about $40.00 for a new sparky.

Thats the big thing I want to go faster but I don't want to spend alot more for a little return. I also will run in the dunes be very little (1 or 2 times a year).

I got rid of a DG for an ESR ATC-5 and that was an unbeleivable difference. The chrome looks great as well! I highly recommend the ESR. I'm selling the DG on ebay right now and it's only at like $10 no reserve.

I have been watching those pipes on ebay thinking "at least it is better than a stock one" but I think I will just get a ESR ATC-5. Just cause I have no reference what is a stock pipe considered? is it a high rev or mid? It doesn't seem to have any real power till 1/2 or better on the throttle.
