250 sx swingarm bearing help

I'm new here and i need advice on how to change my swingarm bearing on 86 honda 250sx, you guys have the knowledge, the main problem is the shaftdrive i have no idea how to get it out of the way, need help, thanks

Just got done doing that on monday !

I"ll find the links to my threads.... should help some.. got pics too.

You have to remove both wheels.. the bearing carrier on the left of the axle ( 4 bolts ) then the brake plate.. 4 more, then pull the axle thru the right side.

then the diff comes out.. and the drive shaft..

You will need to remove one funky nut from the right side of the swingarm.... i made one with a 32mm socket.. but i'm told a blunt punch and a heavy hammer can do it too.

I think he is talking about the swing arm pivot bearings not the axle bearings. In order to do this the swing arm needs to be removed. Then the hardest part is getting the bearing race's out of the frame. Found out from someone on this board if you take a dremel in one spot it will split and come out like butter. This job wasn't as bad as the book makes it out to be so don't be scared.

To the the outer race out of the frame ( the swing arm has needle bearings and the inner part of the bearing will slip right out with the swinger........)

I went to Princess Auto and got a " Blind Bearing Puller ", got that sucker out no problems

Are the '85 250sx swingarm bearings and everything the same on the left and right side of the swinger? I'm re-doing an '85 and when i pulled it apart the bearings fell out into pieces on one side and i threw them away like an idiot. I have the bearings and seal from one side of the swinger so i'm going to a bearing place to get them. What i'm asking is are they the same size? like both identical? And i'm talking about where the swingarm mounts to the frame. Thanks

85,86 87 can all use the same bearing and seal setup - left or right. In 86 and up Honda had the bright idea of vulcanizing a rubber seal to the bearing, itself probably to save cost. I prefer a seal and bearing by itself.

my problem is i cannot remove the swingarm frame because the shaftdrive assembly is in the way, my question is how do i remove the shaftdrive assembly? please let it be simple.

You have to remove the differential, and undo the driveshaft boot.
The driveshaft is splined, and will slip off when you remove the diff.

You basically have to take everything off the swingarm before getting to the bearings.

I didn't remove anything from the swingarm except the brake cables and vent hose. I even left the wheels on to make it easier to move the swing arm around. The trick is to leave the bike on the ground slide the boot back take a pry bar and slide the driveshaft back of the shaft. Once you do that then loosen the pinch nut on the right side of the trike and swingarm comes right off. After you do it once becomes very simply to do.

I don't think you'd want to put a pry-bar any where near that *-joint on the drive shaft.....

The way it's usually done.. is like above.. remove both wheels, left side bearing tube, axle, diff, then simply pull back on the drive shaft and it will get out of the way just fine !

What he's saying is you don't have to remove the diff or anything else to get it off. Just merely slide the ujoint back off the splines without wrecking the rubber boat.

WAZNYK - the driveshaft is not in the way of anything. The whole deal comes off from the right side pivot bolt. The driveshaft side is just a journal slipped into the race within the frame. You have to get the swingarm off or the motor out to get the driveshaft out of the swing arm.

Problem in my case is that the bearing was stuck onto the swing arm stud and it would not slide over enough to come out.. i had to get the drive shaft out of the way to be able to go LEFT far enough to clear the bearing and the stud.

Not that hard to do.. takes 5 minutes to remove all the extras.. no biggie.

also a good time to inspect the rest of the system.

kdagenais your absolutely right. the shaft slid back very easily and the whole assembly is off(swingarm) now i'm tackling a stubborn rusted race. will try some heat and maybe a good chisel if it starts to get chewwed i'll have to invest in a bearing puller, thanks alot, i sure appreciate the help. well off to the race!!!

Trty the dremel theory worked great for me. Once you spilt it on one spot popped right out. Blind bearing puller would be good to I am sure depending on how wore out the race is. Mine the race was so worn there wasn't anything to get a hold of.

i just slid the yoke of fthe output shaft on everyone of my sx's and es's and * can slid eit down its on a sprign andonc ei get that far the whole swingarm will come out enough and just rotate the brake side hub clockwise and it will slide right out.

well it's done, i changed both bearings, they were the same, i popped them out by getting behind them going through the opposite side, it all went quite smoothly, thanks for all the help!
