I have an 85 200s and am having a little problem. Sometimes it idles and runs great and other times it wont idle for long. If you turn up the idle it shifts real hard because the engine rpm wont go down when you shift so its like shfting when your still on the throttle. When you turn the idle down it shifts ok but you stop and it will idle down then idle lower then quit but it does take a second. Anyone got any ideas. Thanks

Mine does it too. I have rebuilt the carb, and messed with jet adjustment......timing is on.......so, I don't know. I can adjust my idle a bit high and it's fine, also. I just deal with it. I was kinda hoping someone would say something, cause it gets to me also. Good luck

This usually means that there is a vacuum leak in the inlet track. Check where the carb bolts to the manifold and then check where the manifold bolts to the head. These should be air tight. Make sure the O rings are good and the bolts arent stripped that hold it on.
If it still plays up after this then my best guess is that your valves arent seating. Inlet and exhaust valves need to seat perfect. Lap in your valves with valve grinding paste until they seal perfect. Hold the combustion chamber upto the light with the valves in (with the engine apart at this stage) and look down the port, you should see no light getting in.
If both of these are right then set your idle mixture then your idle speed as per the manual.
These 3 things are the main contributors to bad idle. If these 3 things are set right then it has no choice but to idle perfect!

Huffa is right.
Also check your plug, replace with a new one.
Make sure air filter is CLEAN and oiled, and seated properly.
What is the condition of your gas ? old gas ? rusty tank ? cloged petcock ?
The choke position goes UP for choke.. DOWN to turn the choke off..... i get them crossed sometimes..LOL... beer.. mmmmmmm
