Just curious how one would compare to the other. Which would be better for a mix of tight trails and open space? Let's hear it

Which ever one is running that day that is paid for.

Both 1985's or do you mean comparing a Z to your 1984 R? The '84 would get clobbered so I'll compare the 85's.
Assuming both machines are bone stock, the Z has an edge in the tight stuff (better low end power). The R has the advantage out in the open. The R has better suspension than the '85 Z also so if you plan to do a lot of jumping that's something to keep in mind.
Either can be setup to overcome it's weak points but everything is a trade off with a two stroke. Do something to increase your top end power and your bottom end will usually suffer and vice versa. My advice, just get whichever one feels the most comfortable to you and set it up according to how you're gonna be using it. You can't go wrong with either one.

Yes, both are 85. Thanks for the info, it really helps. I figure I would want more low end power for trail riding (what it will do most of the time). How do you figure the Tri-Z will fasre against an 02 400ex in a race (Fastest quad I've been on, so I'll use it to compare)? Thanks

I've never ridden a 400ex. Someone that has a modded one said it clock in at 68mph where the '85 Tri-Z topped out around 69-70 stock. I'd put my money on the Z getting there first though.

I have raced 6-7 (400ex) at Silver Lake and they don't really compare. The 250R is easier to get parts for.

a 400ex is a really good handling quad but its an aircooled slug not very fast at all. i think a tri-z would walk all over one.

haha, i just raced a 400ex the other day. I have a 86 250r and im just a beginner on it and im still learning to ride it. The other guy had his quad for awhile and i still beat him. Thats even with horrible shifting on my part. Just some info
