I am working on a 84 200s and was looking for some suggestions in diagnosing this thing.First off starting with a new plug DR8ESL,it starts right up.She runs rough but a consistant rough and it goes to a rough but still running idle. Now after 10-15 minutes of the rough but consistant ideling it starts to blow black smoke.{ Ishould also add that with the new plug at start-up it DOES NOT smoke at all} After it blows the black smoke she starts grasping ,throttle response becomes a boooog let off ,idles rough again but wants to die. This goes on till eventually the plug is dead and it won't start again.Pulling the plug out it is not wet at all, very black though ,the plug is cold fouled!I put in a new DR8ESL plug again and she starts rite up again.I suspect carb problems. The air filter is clean, and the choke is off.I have a carb rebuild kit on the way!In all of this there is no backfiring I adjusted timimg at pulse generator and timing is ok.I am very much a mechanical person but I wanted to know if any of you have run across this before or can tell me what too look for !I really appreciate anything!

Could be your timing, but I doubt it. I think you got it right saying that it is a fuel problem. I am thinking too much fuel. Rebuild the carb and start with your throttle needle adjustment in the middle. On the needle, you will have 5 slots where you can put the e clip-- set it in the middle, and see how she runs. My bet is that it is not in the middle now, it is probably at the bottom, allowing too much fuel. Good luck.

my 185s carb needle slide thingy is on the second from top and it runs perfect when it runs...lol..i say when it runs because its not right now but its my fault y it doesnt...but it ran perfect never blew any black or white smoke out either...it backfired occasionally...i bet its either the needle position or the fuel air mix ...there is a little screw on the bottom of your carb...on the engine side..turn it all the way IN and then 1 1/4 out...see what it does..if it runs a bit better turn it in more and if it runs worse turn it out more...its leaning or richining the fuel/air mix

The nnedle position was 4th groove from the top, specs show 3rd groove from top,I put it there and it still fouls the plug .I really hate the 200s carbs!
