I was adjusting the idle my r yesterday because it was a little hight and when i put the ilde to the point were it almost shut off i noticed and tapping clanking type noise coming from the bottom half of the engine? I never noticed it before while i was riding it, i guess because of the loud exhuast. but the clanking noise sounds kinda loud if you put your ear next to the engine while it idles. Is this normal and im just being paranoid? or what could be causing this? the r runs fine and shifts threw all gears great so im not sure what it could be. ?

Chances are that if you 86 still has the original cylinder the clanking that you hear is coming from the unbridged intake, you will notice this more so at idle than at higher RPM's because it tends to smooth out the noise, which is perfectly normal. The 85 & 86 are unbridged whereas the 87-89 are bridged (not allowing piston slap, the noise you are hearing). Kaysen

My R cranked but made some noises itself. I found a barrel worn cylinder - piston slap - and a cracked counter balancer left housing. I'm told the bolts break there too. Even though it still runs great, I'd tear it down before it self destructs. A tight R motor sounds real good.
