is the starter for a 1985 Big Red ATC250ES something that can be rebuilt? Or can you buy a reman from somewhere? I would even be interested in a working used starter.

E-bay !

usually a few on there.

the brushes on some models can be replaced as long as the coil is ok .

There is a local guy for me who rebuilds alternators and starters. He rebuilt my big red starter (new brushes and trued up the armature in a lathe). Probably someone in your area rebuilds alternators - call them up and ask them. He charged me $40.

Well you have to put in perspective that you can get a brand new one for around 100$ So you have to weigh the cost verse rebuilding. Like stated above, ebay is the place to go..........peace

what does it mean if a starter turns slow? i put in a new battery and hooked jumper cables to it from my car and it still turns slow. to slow to fire it up.

It could be draging. If you dont know someone who knows how to do it, buy a new one. It isnt worth the money and trouble. Dad can do mine so It will only cost about $8. :D

i had the nose cone bearing go out in my 250es starter. honda don't have them any more so i went to a bearing dealer ( buddy bearing - nation wide )
and they took the mesurements from my old one and got one that was very close to the oem one. 3 years later it's still cranking over fine. that was a 9 dollars part.
