Is there a difference between those years for the rear plastics? If so, do they have to be modified to fit, and how?

Yes... Yes... and redrilling and cutting. Just buy the right plastic for the right trike! :welcome: to the board btw!
I got a set of 85 fenders with a 83R seat when I bought my 82R. The worse part is the fit of the 83R seat against the plastic. The 85 R seat is 'straight' while the 83R seat has a arch curve and then up the tank. Wish I'd taken a pic of it before I sold the seat off to Kintore... it was UGLY!

D'oh!
I probably should have asked before winning them on ebay. There is a person or company on ebay selling brand new Maier plastics that were purchased from a store that had fire damage. The listing says they may be dirty but none were exposed to heat or warped, some shown new in bags, but I figured worse case scenario I get the dirty one not in a bag - oh well.

Would this be really noticeable if I picked up an 85-86 seat for the plastic? Or should I just resell the 85-86 plastics and find one for an 83?

If you get a 85-86 seat, the bolts for the mounting hardware will not match up with your frame. Hopefully, the one's you have will be like new and you can resell/trade someone for the correct fenders.

the seat WILL NOT go on, the only chance is if you bungee cord it on..

Ahh, well.....here's what I'm working with so far...
The rear plastics are torn off on the left side, all there on the right. The blue vinyl on the seat is ripped and hanging off, so I just covered it with a red towel until I can find a decent seat replacement. The rear tires dont match....the left side is the rounded tire, where the right is the flatter shaped tire, which I think is more like stock.

Will any other ATC or ATV model plastics fit the 83 250R? I'm not having luck finding them on ebay now, I'm hoping other models use identical rear fenders so I an broaden the search...

Just order a new Maier from James Lucky. I think they're $103.00 and in stock. Well worth it for that bike! The hard part to find is the tank shrouds.
Also, if you visit your local Fabric Store, you can pick up the seat cover material for about $5.00. Real easy to do yourself with a heavy duty stapler and a hair dryer. Make sure you find the good, stretchy vinyl and just pull it tight as you go. Use the hairdryer to heat it and stretch all the wrinkles out as you staple it!

Quote from e-bay :
"hard to find and rumored to be completely out of production very soon. But these old 3 wheelers are tanks and seem to last forever. With these replacement body panels you can through away the duct tape you have been using to hold your 3 wheeler together. "
That was funny..... LOL.....
I wish i could put R plastic on my SX...

Late model R plastic will fit. If you want to put in the time. I had to make a seat, then redo the mounting and latch.......................... :TrikesOwn

Since your pointing things out, did you notice the 3 lug rear wheels?

I am guessing you guys want the story? hah... just to answer a few things for now.. The front brakes were there.. thats a 84 front end with a 85/86 front rim/hub, the dude before me swapped the forks around and made it leading axle, so the brakes were on the opposite side.. (notice how low the front end sits). The rear hubs were real oldschool yammie ones that someone threw on (and for some reason they fit perfectly). That picture is about 3 years old, probably more (estimating). At the time the picture was taken, the R was in my possesion for 3 days. I had just bought it, and rebuild the entire engine (took 2 days) spent the third day beating the piss out of it to make sure it was gonna be worth turning back into a 84 R. LOL. I didnt pay much for it, because as you can see it really wasnt worth much.. But when I was done with it and parted it out, I made near 3 grand. (motor itself went for around 650).
