i just took apart the top end of my 86R. The motor is only on its 2nd bore. The piston wasnt too bad, and it ran fine before i took it apart. My question about the rod is this: how much, if any play should there be in the lower part of the connecting rod? should it be able to move side to side at all? Thanks for your help

Side to side is ok, it's the up and down you need to be concerned with.

it should maove side-to-side too much, but bill x r is right, the up and down is most imprtant, and there shouldnt be any up and down play in it, if there is get a new rod and rod bearing, you dont want the rod to sieze up on ya....trust me

thanks guys, what about the small end rod bearing, what does a worn out one look like? im gonna replace it along with the piston and rings, but i was just curious. the only reason i took the top end apart was because i broke 2 exhaust flange bolts, i have been very relieved so far

you know to be real helpful in these tech fourms,,,, maybe you guys should back up what you say with figures to REALLY help the person out that asks a question!!! cause i HIGHLY doubt you can tell how much clearance you have without MEASURING IT PROPERLY!!!

great!!! how much side to side???????? and up and down????
you can have as much as 40 thousandths side play and be ok,,,, you can also have as much as 2 thousandths end play in the lower rod bearing,, the wrist pin maximum is 1 thousandths clearance

Sorry Chief, I offered up what I knew, most of us do the best we can. Sorry if that is not up to your standards. Maybe you need to calm it down a bit. It's not like I told the guy to go tear his motor apart and look for this or that. If I had the numbers I would have posted them. IMO my info was good and accurate, not nearly as infomative as your post, but like I said. I do the best I can. From the info I gave he....nevermind. Sorry it was not as helpfull as yours! I will try and do better next time. Sheeessshhh!

no worries ,,, its not MY standards,,, if you went to the auto parts house and asked for timing degrees on your ole bomber ,,, the guy behind the counter says,,, " well buddy, just throw er in gear and if she don't ping yer pretty close!"
when people want technical help , they should get it,, thats just the way i see it,,,, there are several places to dig up facts its just some of us go that extra mile :D :D :D
