how do you guys get it so your VIN number is still readable after powdercoating the frame?....i have a 85'R and the VIN is hard to read as it is, and it isnt like the frame is all super rusty, it still has the factory paint over the VIN and it is so lightly stamped on the frame...idk what to do...

I shine a flashlight directly at it, makes it readable, barely, I always write it down before powdercoat, I had a 350x that got covered up and had to guess on a couple letters.

If there is more then a couple of coats, it wont be visable anymore. My 86 has 3 coats of powdercoat, so you can no longer see the vin on it at all.

Mine disappeared with the powder on the T3 --As long as you write it down you have it but it truly doesnt identify the bike anymore. When you guys register yours like for the oregon dunes Do you just have to fill out the # on the paperwork ??? or Does any one actually inspect the numbers on the bike for any reason anywhere???

i live in NY and the DMV requires you rub a pencil or something over paper on top of them VIN...it is super stupid, but mine has never been registered before so i dont know if it is special or something....

Since it is so small of an area, I'd paint it 1st with noraml spray can paint and then tape it off for the powder coating or clean it really good to the bare metal, tape it off, powder coat then blast a few coats of clear over it with no paint on it.

Where is the location of it? Steering stem?

You can ask them to lay the powder on real thin in that area. I am sure the powder coat guy knows about this??

My problem started when i did the prep. I had a ton of surface rust so i decided to use a 4 1/2 grinder with a flat wire wheel to get the rust off . I took some of the numbers down just by hitting them with that accidently before i realized it was strong enough to do that.. So its partly my fault my #s are now covered

Get a set of number and letter stamps and go over the VIN and clean it up,

the laeger frames have vin's assigned.. my lonestar and my lrd both did, they attach a plate to them, and give you the paperwork!

Oregon requires you to use the VIN for registering the bike and the Police people on the dunes will check the vin if they stop you (if/when your tag was registered with a VIN). For custom ones, they just write "Custom" or such and then your set to go.
