View Full Version : Are we a bunch of middle aged farts trying to hang on to our younger days with trikes

I was just wondering what is the average age of the members here still hanging on to old trikes.
i am 31 years old and still love trikes. i started out back in '83 on a honda atc110 and i was hooked!....owned just about everything once or twice since then.
so how old is everyone and which trike got you hooked?

Well I'm only 18 so i'm basically just getting started on trikes. My dad bought a tri-moto 175 and 125 from an old friend maybe 5 or 6 years ago so that is basically what i started out on as for trikes. We sold them and now i own a atc 90 that needs alot of work, an atc 110 that i modified into a chopper, abasket case '85 250sx <- parting out and now i have an '85 200x. My dad also just purchased that tiger that was on ebay. With howdy being my uncle, im sure i will always have someone to help me out and give me a hand if i need. So it looks like there is one more triker in the world and maybe my kids someday, who knows!

I am a little older than 15. I caught the disease from my sweet little 125m. I have only bought 2 (still got em) . TECHNICALLY the first trike that got me hooked was my cousins 250sx at age 8....so i worked until i was 11 and bought my m for $450

I'm 42, rode a skidoo 340, and a 1976 kawasaki 100 brand spankin new since I was 15-18 years old. I got married, and there were other priorities after that. I bought that yt125 three wheeler for my kids years ago and they don't ride it any more. I just find I like fixing it now I like fixing more than actual riding now. I just can't see getting rid of it as it don't need much maintenance to keep it going. But I definately got the bug to get a bigger and faster one though.

I am 25 and been loving trikes since I was 6 years old when my buddy got a 3 year old 110 for his birthday....I grew up poor, never could have a ATV/ATC/dirtbike but I always rode my friends....Now that I have my own successful business, trikes are cheap to have so I recently bought a 85 250SX and that baby got me hooked. I now also have a mint 85 350X which I may sell....But my 3 kids will have whatever 3 wheelers they want growing up. Can't have them growing up the way I did...deprived of 3 wheelers!!!!

31 or 32 years old. My first trike was a 225 dx back in 84' or 85 can't really remember.
this is my 3rd trike I've owned it's a 200x. Before that I had a 85' 250sx. Various other
quads and bikes over the years but without a doubt three wheelers are the most fun.
After the weather warms up a bit I plan on doing another resto on something.
Restoring them is almost as fun as riding them plus It gives me something to do and
keeps me out of trouble. Well, for the most part.
Wow!!! There sure are alot of youngins on here... Makes me feel old.
Yea twgranger lighten up! :D

I will be 36 this sunday(March 20th). I first got the feel of a 3 wheeler back in 1978-79. I rode a US 90 for the first time in San Diego sand. It was really cool and I thought I was king, esp only being 10...hehehe. Since then I have been able to buy 4 trikes off the show room floor(86 200x, 87 200x, 86 250ES, and 87 125). I got out of trikes but it was only a brief time before my friend fixed my old bigred and started riding it................peace

I am 31 and got into 3wheelers when I was 10 and rode my first one. I was hooked. I got a 70 to learn on as did my younger brother. Then I got a 200s for Christmas and my bro got a 125M. After that he got a TRX 250 utility model and I got a 200x. After that when I was 14 I got a 1985 250r and he got the biggest POS we ever had a Susucki 1989 Quadsport 250. I broke almost weekly. Took a break until 2002 when I bought my 400ex brand new and then came a 1985 250r. I now have a 1985 250R, 1986 250R, 1985 350x, 1984 200S, 2002 400EX, 1998 KLF 220 Bayou, and a 2001 KLF 220 Bayou. My kids are hooked on ATV's in general, and I am on 3wheelers.

im 98. been riding a atc20k since the age of 3 1/2. back then, my 250r was a 3 wheeled horse cart. it was towed by a horse that had enough room in its gut to eat 20kg of food, hence the name 20k. man, that thing was fast, until i jumped on this 70...blew me socks off with the speed.

Most my freinds don't like them though. They say they are for geeks. I think the geeks are the ones that just can't get a knack for riding them and run over their feet all the time!

Just turned 33 --- Been riding motocross and quads since 14 or 15. I always had the cheapest and junkiest bikes back in the day because the family never had much money and didn't buy me anything. I saw one ATC 250R back then and NEVER forgot it The first impression it made on me was INCREDIBLE. Well I've worked my but off , built a killer house on 30 acres, and now its time to buy and build the toys I could never have. When we rode back then (mid 80s one older guy with a scraggly beard (late 30s we called him BUB) always came down to watch us in the sand pit on a 200x. I thought to myself WOW "will i be riding when i'm OLD in my thirties". This spring I'm loadin up the 85 R going to the SAME sand pit and mountains where we used to ride and I'm taking a nostalgic ride to celebrate the memories, BUB, and riding in my thirties.

28 years old, fast approaching the big 3-0. Started riding when I was 12. I bought an 81 XR80 off some kid and my mom almost killed me when she found out. Still have the bike, along with the XR350 I graduated to. After that it was quads, but I always had a spot in my heart for the trikes, just could never afford to have both bike and trike until I got older. First trike I ever rode was an 84 200S that my buddy got. I used to try to put my feet down and I'd run myself over. Now I have 2 350X's, a 200S, and 2 250R's that I am in the process of building up, along with a 400EX, Fl350, XR80 converted to 100, and the list goes on, too much to list here. Trikes have become my favorite thing to ride, although I still mostly ride the quad on long trips. See you all at TF05!

Well I'll be 25 in two days....the first thing I ever rode was my cousins little yellow 50cc suzuki trike when I was 5. I had a 80cc blue yamaha moto4 when I was 10- that was a great little atv. When I was 17, I bought an on/off road 125cc Honda trail bike. Now I have an '87 Big Red and I have to say that it is my favorite out of everything I have ever owned. Trikes remind me of my childhood lol, I wish I would have been a little older back when they were still on the market...I would have probably tried them all out lol.

I'm 33 and bought my first 3-wheeler in 1985, it was a 1978 atc90. Since then I have honestly owned over forty running 3-wheelers. So it has pretty much been all I eat, drink and sleep. My wife doesn't worry about me dragging another woman home, worries more about what big "piece of junk" (her words) I'm going to bring home. But she's great doesn't complain.

My first trike was an '83 ATC110 that my father brought home. I was 15 at the time and now I'm 37. I was an addict immediately! We traded that in on a 200S the next year and the year after that I bought my beloved 350X and still have it! Picked up a couple of 250R's (81 & 82) and bought my uncle's '82 Big Red. Now my Dad and I are fixing up the '81R and the '82 Big Red and he's 60 LOL. He still rides but it's on a 4-wheeler (Bombardier Outlander Max 2-seater). Although last year we both were riding 350X's out in the Glamis dunes and hitting the big dunes to boot! I guess we're both reliving the early years.

Well, I'm getting up there. I'm 43 and heading for the 44 in Sept. My first trike was a Honda 185s that I got when I was around 20. Rode the **** out of it. Had a blast. then sold it to a friend that wanted it bad. Then I heard about the demise of the new ones so I rushed to my local Honda shop and the only one he had left in a crate was a 87 200x that he said he was suppose to send back. I talked the best talk I could and finally he said "load it in your truck and get the **** out of here". I even bought the tach and speedo to go on it. I had it about 3 years and after countless nagging from the folks on how dangerous it was I finally surrendered and sold it for $1800. Never had a wreck on it. Not once. But made some fantastic jumps with it though. I always regretted selling it. Now.....years later......I decided to do something about it and find one like I use to have. Well, I have. It's not in as good a shape as my first one, but it runs and hey, that was 18 years ago. So, I'm going to restore it. Now I'm back in the groove. May not be as young as I was then, but you know, when I got on this one, all the memories came back and I felt right at home. Glad to see that there is still people riding them.

I'm 26 now.
Had a few dirt bikes when i was a kid, damn things kept breaking down on me, POS KV-75.. argh... i swear i pushed it more than it drove me around. I wrecked, crashed, flipped, but never broke any bones. thank god.
Years passed, and went to college, work work work... finally got a job and started being able to buy what i wanted.... with limited funds.
Bought a house last year and there was an 82 in the garage, not running, and my plan was to learn to fix it up, slowly but surely aquired the tools, and during my quest to fix it up a friend found an 84 BigRed that ran, wich i quickly picked up to ride while i finished up the 82.
One day Rob0781( on his 185S ) and Adam250SX ( on his 81 R ) showed up at my door and we went riding in the rain, had a blast, and found out there was such a thing as an SX.. ???? wow.. had never heard of that before and adam250sx became adamno250sx... LOL..
Hook line and money sinker later.. here i am 1000 posts in under a year !!! :D

I am 28 almost 29. I lived around or on the farm all my life. My grandfather bought a 110 new in 82. While waiting to pick it up on a service in 84 my grandma entered a raffel at the dealership and won a Blue 70. My cousins and I rode them when we could get them away from the farm chores. They alway ran for the 70, I ran for the 110 which was fast for a 10 year old. Got a 70' CT70 in 1990 or so. I was a rare one with a manual clutch. Rode it and the wheelers till I went to college in 95. Then in 98 traded all of them (non running shot tres and such) on a super clean 86' 200X. Of all of them I like the X best but it is the first real sport rig we have had. Kinda regret getting rid of the 70. Now my wife has a 400EX and I am looking to maybe get a 350X or 250R ATC. I told her about my urge last night and she agreed that a three wheeler is what I need, that I look better on one. Maybe just a trick to keep me off her 400.

I've always ridden four-wheelers that belong to other people but between kids and divorce lawyers I could never afford one for myself. I started noticing cheap 3-wheelers for sale but figured I wanted to run with the big dogs and just ignored them.
In Sept. '03 on a Saturday i was bored and there were quite a few three-wheelers for sale in the newspaper so I grabbed my boy and, just for something to do, went shopping. I had no intention of buying -- I was flat broke. (Still am, actually.)
Visited a few old beat-up Big Reds for $1k and had no idea if that was a good deal or not, knowing nothing about three-wheelers. Finally we drove about two hours to an old retired Coast Guard serviceman's house, just for the sake of going for a drive. He advertised a 185s in mint shape for $700. We searched for the house and passed a driveway several times with a shiny, like-new trike in front of the garage, but I kept going because there was NFW that trike was the one for $700. Well, it was! My kid was going nuts! "Dad, you're not leaving here without that trike!"
He gave me a quick riding lesson and I toured around his yard. Told me he only drove it in winter, back and forth from his ice-fishing shack, which was within sight of his house. Still had the little tits on the tires. In 20 years, he said, he didn't put 20 tanks of gas through it. He stored it in spring, summer and fall. Never seen mud, dirt or pavement. You could tell he was honest because a) he was old and chastised me for saying a cuss word and b) you could eat off the floor of his garage -- he had the walls covered in peg-board and had outlines drawn on the boards where all the tools go. You know the type -- does everything exactly right.
To make a long story only slightly less long, I zipped down to the local ATM and took out $700 on my credit card and have hardly missed a weekend of riding since. Runs like the wind, never a problem (busted the pullstarter once but that's it) and acting like a kid at 48.5 years old! (But let me assure you it is NOT mint anymore!)
Some day I'll still get myself a quad. But I'll always have a trike. Love it!

36 now, I started riding at age 2 on sleds. My first ride was on my fathers sled, I grabbed a handful of throttle and tossed my father off the back, I was told I made it about 300 yards by myself before I let off. They bought me a artic cat kitty cat then at age 4 they got me a honda lil devil 50cc. I rode those 2 for many years and moved up to a kawasaki 175 enduro and a ski roul 340 at age 13. I had traded the bike for a car at age 14 so I could get it ready for when I got my license. When I was 15, almost 16 I traded the car for a brand new 85 350x. I traded the X for a 86 250r and have owned a few since then. I can say I have always had at least one machine to ride but I let my trx sit in my garage for almost 8 years after I quit racing. I kind of fell out of the sport when I started a family. When I joined this site I had 1 trx 250r and my streetbike and all the talk about the trikes got me back into it. I never knew the trikes and riders were still into it until I found this site. Now I can't help but buy up every R I can get my hands on. This year I'm going to try to give up the erge to buy and try to focus on restoring what I have now. I have also gotten back into racing so that has and will take up alot of my time.

WOW check out the history you all are talking,"that is so cool dude",Yeah I'm in my 30's not the youngest ,not the oldest and deffintly not the wisest LOL! I started riding in about 74 or 75 on a 72 green monster US 90. I really loved that thing,I remember my Dad got on it one day gave her a little too much gas and dumped her in gear.He probably weighed 250 or so at the time. All I remember was the old man flying back and the ffront tire pointing straight up, he landed on his A-- and he told me to park it.It was'nt long after the green monster ran away ,he told me! I looked and looked and I still never found the green monster butI still look for it everywhere I go.

I am 28 and the first trike that I rode on was a honda 200X! Yes, my first ride was on one of the best trikes ever made!!! I grew up in a poor family. And all the farm familys around me could afford to get 3-wheelers!! But not us!! I allways wanted to get one but they were way to dangerous!! Or so my parents said!! So after I "grew up" and got a "good job" and a 4-wheeler I ended up buying a house!! So I sold my 4-wheeler to pay for some of the closeing costs and I told myself that there was no way that I was coming out of this without some kind of ATV!! I ended up with 2-Kaw.-Tecate's(84-85) for less than 1/3rd of what I got for my 4-wheeler!! I still have them both and am adding to my collection I just got an 85 350X for $75 and going to still look for a 200X to make a full circle!!!! :Bounce !!

Well, Im 17 years young, I rode an ATC90 when I was five, I rolled it and bad mouthed 3 wheelers for about 10 years. When I was 15 I rode my uncles warrior, it was fun but it didnt have enough power for my liking, then my Dad got a 250SX last year and aint life grand, I like 3 wheelers agian but It still wasnt fast enough for me and it got boring, I purchased a 84 T3 with the 85 front end and motor work, this satisfied my craving for speed and power, now I purchased another 84 T3 and plan on puttin a 600CC street bike engine.

Well, I'm 32 feeling 45...
I don't know if I could pick just one 'wheeler that won me over to 3-wheelers. The first few that I rode would've been either a YTM 225, an ATC 185s, or an ATC 110...all of which my friends owned when we were kids. The 110 was probably the first one I rode...in about '83 or so. (That was a lot of beers ago).
I got my first machine, an '84 Big Red, in '84. Since then I've owned, racing some in organized events in the 80's, in order:
'85 Quadsport 230(new)
'85 YTM 200ERN Yamahauler(cam and Kerker exhaust)
'85 ATC 350X(was stolen from me, later recovered)
'83 YTM 225
'85 ATC 250R(ported, etc...FAST)
'86 RM 250(new)
'86 TRI-Z(new)
'85 ATC 250sx(dome-top piston,Sand Scorcher ex.,axle extenders, flat tracks)
'86 Tecate
'86 TRI-Z(my previous machine bought back)
'85 YTM 225(for my ex-wife)
'84 YTM 225(parts for above)
'85(?) Cagiva 200(bought for less than $50...I sold it..I know,I hate me too  )
'85 Tecate
'86 TRI-Z(bought back and sold for the final time)
'92 Yamaha WR500(new...2-stroke dirt bike)
'84 Tecate
'88 Quadracer(forgive me yet again)
'86 ATC 200X
'86 TRI-Z(different one...sold this one to Keith Little..or someone at his shop anyway)
'85 Tri-Z(rolling chassis..mint black/red given to me)
'86 TRI-Z(for parts)
'84 ATC 200x
'84 ATC 200X(for parts)
'84 YTM 200E Yamahauler
'85 ATC 250R(big carb, Turner Hi-Rev, Short Track Tank kit,)
2-'84 125M's(currently have that are shared by my 5 boys)
Looking for a Tecate Project now..prefer first generation.
