Hey guys, I'm trying to find out if the speedo gear/drive that mounts on the front axle on the Honda 250sx/250es/350x/250r is the same size and all? Are the front axles on these trikes the same diameter? I've heard that the speedo calibration can vary depending on tire size and all too....what do yall know? thanks

250sx has 22" tire. 250R and 350X has 23.5 inch tire. 250es has 25 inch tire. There are three different gear boxes for the three different tire sizes.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking....how do you know what gear box to get if the gearbox is sold alone, not in a kit with a part # ?

Don't forget that different trikes have brakes on L and R.... so that doubles the number. Some of the hub sizes are different too. Welcome to the world of confusion!

Bruce

PS - The one on ebay currently is a Left handgear box... the style of the gear box would make it a for a 200X or a 83-84R if it's a 23½" tire ratio, or it looks exactly like my 82R one too. (22" tire) Of course, if that's what you're getting at.

Well, I just got back from the honda dealer. They had 2 speedo kits, one for a 250r and one for a 200e. The speedo gearbox for the 250r had HA2 stamped on it. I have a 250es, does anyone know if that gearbox will work on it? this really is a confusing dilema lol.

The 200E on is a Left hand gearbox. I believe I have a complete kit for that... for 200E, 200, 185, 110.

The HA2 one is for a 85-86R. It's a right hand gearbox, for the 23½" tire. Not sure if the hub design will match up. I know the 200E one and the 82 250R ones I have here are both Left hand gearboxes, but they have a diferrent diameter ring where it goes inside the wheel hub.

Good find... I'm amazed a dealer still had them on the shelf! The HA2 one will work very nicely on a 350X though... so go pick it up for me if you can't use it! :Bounce

Hey Maine Triker, I saw those ones on ebay...how much do those gearboxes usually end up going for? I think the one for the 350x will work on the 250es. I'll let yall know what I find out.

They can get up there in a hurry in price. The 350X one will work on the BigRed. Calibration might be a hair off, but not enough to wory about. I see you went and checked out the shop we talked about. It doesnt suprise me that they have them. PM me.

Thats the first gearbox that I've seen on EBAY by itself, I paid $110 for a wheel that had the gearbox attached, but I really lucked up on that one. There is also a speedo display that says ATC on it in another auction, bid's are low right now, but I've seen those go for $170.

Is it now about the money or is it restoring/parts for our ATC's??? sad

Actually, the Honda list price was ~$65-$80 for just the kit or ~$110 if the speedo head was included. He'd probably not clear that unless it is a kit with the speedo head. The last 3 complete kit's I've bought on ebay were all in the $35-60 range.

I guess I'd have to do some homework before taking a guy's word that the speedo gear box works for a 200X 350X 250R. If you know much about them, you'll know it can't work on all three! Take the gamble I guess....

So Pat.... what's the latest and greatest?

Well I found out that the speedo gear for the 250R will work on the 250ES, I'm prob. gonna pick it up from the honda dealer over here. All I would need after that would be the speedo head which is not too hard to come by.

You will probably have to fab up your own speedo mount with that kit. The calibration will be a hair off, but not much.... it'll read a bit low. The cable will be a touch long as well. Good luck!

You can buy new speedo's from Honda. PN 08E80-HM4-100 (-300 for KPH) ~$50 from www.servicehonda.com However, they have a chrome top ring and have red lettering... looks more old school. I plan on using one on my 82R.

If was me, I'd wait and find the correct kit for the correct trike than to hodge podge pieces together. I know someone that might sell their complete 85-86 Big Red Speedo setup... I pm'd it to you Pat.

Would it ever be possible to mount a speedometer on a 1984 atc 200s? My price range is about $50-$60.

gobblert, the gear drives aren't very expensive, it's the speedo itself that usually runs the big money. If you would settle for a less than cherry speedo, then maybe you could get real close to your $60, but more than likely $80 to $100 though. The 90/110/185/200/ speedo drives kits were really cheap at one time, but have even pretty much dried up. I think I still have a nos speedo drive kit like that and a less than cherry speedo. I never tested the speedo to see if it worked though when I got it. It's dented and has some rust on it, but the lens is unbroken and the speedo is still attached. I've seen people use worse speedos. If you could find someone who would remove the lens and take the dent out of the shell and repaint it, then it should be ok.

Bumping an old thread so I don't clutter the board with a similar question.

I have a complete speedo unit in excellent condition from an 84 200ES I believe. It appears to be a right mounted setup. The box is stamped with just a number 1 and what I'm guessing is an eagle? Aftermarket, most likely. At any rate. What are the chances of this working on my 85 250SX?
