I'm stumped on this one. I picked up a 1985 Tri-Moto 225. Been setting for 1-2 years or more?? [so i was told} I took the cyl. off honed the cyl. reringed. lapped[seated the valves ] took the carb and cleaned it more then once. set the timing and adj valves according to specs. It has good comp and good spark[new plug] it fired up for me just once by squirting gas into the carb but most of the time it just turns over and over with a little puff back througth the carb. So I rechecked the timing / valve adj and cam chain tension. everything is right on where it is supposed to be according to the manual. I don't have a gas tank for it thats why I have to give it a shot of gas in the carb but I would think it would fire right up every time this way. No??? I have done to many trikes just to see if they would run for a second or two but this one is stubborn, or am I forgetting something?? any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks ATCwithdrawals

There is a check valve that comes off the carb.Check if that is falty,if it is it will cause it to run for a few seconds and then die.

Well, simply put, it just won't start. It has fired up one time for about 2 seconds and from then on it has just coughed back through the carb when cranking it over. I have checked the timing 2 times and it is right on. Great comp. valves adj. to specs. cleaned carb 2 times. New plug and has consistent bright blue spark. Any solution, I'm all ears. Thanks

When you say "great compression"...........is that just by holding you thumb over the SP hole or by actually checking it with a guage?

..........and just to double check, you are opening the throttle fully when you squirt some in, right?

well u said u dont have a gas tank, why bother starting it if u dont have a gas tanl, if u squirt some gas in there and put the choke on it should start up for a couple seconds then stop, how about u wait till u get a tank then try to start it

You are right about getting a gas tank for it before i start it, but I really wanted to make sure it would run and hear the motor before I started putting a bunch more money into it

Well, I finally got the 225 running.I borrowed the tank off my Big Red just to try and cleaned the carb again. There was alot of crud in under the needle seet. Runs good. Now i have a reason to start getting some goodies for it. Thanks for everyones input. :D
