85 and 86 250r need different rear sprockets?

On rocky mountain atv the front sprockets are for 83-86 but the rear sprockets only say 86 for every brand on there. Is the 86 really different than the 85? Anyone know where to get a 38 tooth rear sprocket for an 85 for under 20 bucks?

I just looked through my Honda Service manual (factory) and the sprockets are strikingly different.
The '86 LOOKS a lot like my old 350X sprocket, whereas the '85 looks MUCH different.
The axles are different between '85 and '86 as well.

Take it from me.....Honda changed a LOT of things between '85 and 86.

ok heres the difference..... 85 soprcket has 10 mm holes straight through.
the 86 sprocket has 10mm countersunk holes so if you flip it over you can use a 86 on a 85 ,, but with the holes being countersunk the holes are a little larger ,,, it will work but ,,,it will try to work back and forth and loosen up. i was going to look into shorter countersunk screws ,,, but i haven't done it yet,,,

Interesting subject. I wondered what the difference was. So they both have the same size holes but the one is just countersunk? Why would that make it want to work loose? You should use locktite on those bolts anyway.

The 85 and 86 carrier are different and the difference is the thickness of the adjuster area. The 85 was thinner and the sprocket gets mounted to the away side(from the carrier) for proper chain alignment. The 86 had a wider adjuster area on the carrier and that meant that the location of the sprocket was pushed out further. To compensate, the moved the sprocket mounting to the inner side of the sprocket hub for proper chain alignment. As said before, the 85 sprocket since it mounts from the outside and the sprocket hub has threads to accept the bolts is different than the 86 mount. The 86 again mounts to the inside and used tappered screws for the countersink(Allows clearance of the carrier) in the sprocket and nuts to secure it. A 6 sprocket will work flipped over and mounted on the outside, but a 85 will not work on a 86.

On a side note! As for carriers, you can use either year carrier, but you have to have the correct sprocket hub for proper alignment of the chain.

if you have a 85 swinger you have to use a 85 carrier ,, and the same with a 86 86 or newer carrier ,,,,,,,,,
