How do you tell the difference between the 85 and 86 rearends. My roller frame is a 85 but all the plastic is from an 86. I can't find any good photo's of my old 85 to compare.

Thats an 85...the left side spacer-spanner on the carrier is different than the 86

That looks like 85 to me. I believe your caliper has that little bolt on stay arm that runs from the front of the caliper to the swingarm. If it does, it's 85. If not it's 86. 86 has a different brake stay. It's a pin on the side of the swingarm.

Also, I believe the carrier area of the 86 is bigger than the 85. Your carrier has the slots for a spanner wrench like my 85 (near the sprocket). 86 would have a carrier with holes in it instead of slots.

Dammit!

The ones with holes are aftermarket. The stock '86 has slots but only a couple of big ones instead of all those little ones.

Thanks guys 85 swinger it is, bummer I gave away all my old 85 parts. A buddy of mine has a plus 4 for me, but I'll need all the 86 goodies. I'm picking up my motor in the morning. Now I need to come up with some motor mounts and bolts.

Looks like it's gonna be a fun project for you. I'm looking forward to being done with mine and starting on something else completely different.
