first of all, make sure the piston is at top dead center, you can find this out by looking down the spark plug hole, and if it is at top dead center if you unscrew the cab by the pull start and look through it you should see a small "T", after that pull all the cdi stuff off, and aling the small dot on the cam gear with the "v" cut out in the top of the rocker box, then once that is done put the cdi stuff back on and make sure the base plate is straight and align the line on the piece that slided over the camshaft with the line on the base plate plastic thing and it should be correct and fire right up, this is how to set the timing.

The bit about the CDI stuff is wrong. Do as you said but when lining up the black pickup with the rotor make sure that the "F" is visible in the flywheel hole not "T". "T" is used for the cam timing only not the ignition.
