View Full Version : Quizz ? on 200S - you smart enough to diagnose the problem?

Your riding along on your 200S or whatever Honda 200 model for that matter.
You didn't check the oil & it is quite low. While riding you start to get a slight miss but it gets you through the day. Take it out the next day or week and (still not checking the oil) it starts a little harder then usual and the miss (or loss of power) begins to be more pronounced. Suddenly you see a bit of oil weeping from the lower part of the CDI cover and in a few hours it starts missing more and finally quits but it DID NOT seize up. You can kick and kick and the motor turns over fine.......it just won't start anymore.
What just happened here? This is a pretty tough one so don't feel bad if you can't figure it out. I don't think I could of answerd it and only know from working on one. In fact I know I could have not answered it!

you busted a seal in the cdi mounting plate and its overheated so all your doing when kicking it or pulling it over is flooding it and wasting your strength you could be using to push it home..wait about a 10 minutes after it shuts of to start pulling or kicking it over..and put more oil in! is that it?? sounds close

A small crack in the head would explain the loss of power and hard start. but not the cdi part of the problem, unless oil was commin out your breather onto the cdi Box and fried it.
I dont mess with any 200s so that is my best guess.

I'll say this much: A seal has something to do with it but that's not the main problem anymore.

Since your getting a new head and cam for an S i'll say it has something to do with that.

Your rings went bad and the trike started to burn the oil. But you were to busy looking forward to notice the big cloud of blue/black smoke behind you ??? This happened to my nephew recently.. Now Uncle Chris gets to rebuild the top end..

Yea your right but even with that clue I'll bet no one still figures it out why it quit.

Nope, but thanks for trying!
Man, I just hope that your nephews didn't begin to do the same thing this one did or you'll have other problems too.

Hey Mr. Huffa sir:
You are reffering to a honda 200 S right? Not a honda 200 X ?

I would guess that the cam journals wore out which is the main problem. The oil seal behind the cdi then worn out because of the loose cam which cause the oil leak.

lack of oil wore the rockers untill far enough gone that it wouldnt open the valve any more

Good guess and congradulations on being the closest and that is why the oil leak occured. You still have the "Why did it die?" to figure out though.

Nope...still has healthy compression or I should say good enough that it would not cause the "no start" situation.

Got you worried huh? :D It's the 200S.
I should clarify also that this was not me or anyone else I know driving it (just bought it & don't know history of it). This was the diagnostic conclusions that MX600 & I came to after we took it apart and that's (my story) what we invisioned happened while riding it.

I will say that it died because the cam chain then wore out and it was nolonger timed right. :wondering

Nope. Come on Fox.....keep trying!!!!!!!!!!
Hint: gap.
Actually thats a very good guess too and the cam chain was shot but thats still not why it died.
the cam jounals wore casuing slop in the cam and the puse rotor could move up and down, so when the cam turns it close's the gap on the pulse rotor and cant make a spark...that right?, just have to add, it was only missing befor becuse the oil seal wasnd chewed up, after the seal went caput, the cam could now move more//

The WINNER!!!!!!! :beer
Except for one thing you got backwards but close enough.
The cam (sprocket side) dropped down in the jornal causing the pulse rotor to move away from the electronic P/U which then of course widened the gap till the spark dissapeard. The gap was over 3 times of what it should have been or darn close to it.
MX600 got the idea to take just one screw out of the pickup (none adjustable) and tilt it down to get sufficent gap for testing purpose only. Immeaditly we had a nice healthy blue spark and the bike ran too!

Yeha, that could of happened to me .. my oil passage was blocked with a nice chunk of silicon. ... My cam got all messed up, but its still runnable .. I really should get a new cam, but I AM cheap right now :S .. cause if I get a cam I need new rockers or the cam that went with those rockers...
anyone have a x cam ? .. xr cam? ..
ahh, i was close it tipped me off as soon as you said gap....lol
