In the summer me and a bunch of people went biking and some idiot on a 4-wheeler backed into me and knocked my gear shifter off and stripped the spline. I took the bolt of the brake leaver and rigged it up to get home,. From than on I put bolts on hammer it in and tighten it up. It will last quite a while but now nothing seems to work. Any ideas.

drill a hole through the shifter and the shifter lever. Then put a bolt through it. That should work real well.

wheeliepops has a great idea to put a harded pin thru it .
howdy also showed many of us at one of the trikefest i've been to another way of dealing with a stripped shift shaft.
he took a hack saw and shaved off a slice of the pinch part on the lever to give it a wee bit of more gap in the shift lever. then using a narrow strip of pop can he cut a peice the same width and long enough to wrap around the shaft coming out of the motor ,,, clamped the lever over the shift shaft with the thin sliver of alu in between and clamped it all down . to the best of my knowledge it held up the rest of the time the rider (?) was at haspin.
just another idea ,,, john

What splines are stripped? The ones on the shifter, the ones on the shaft, or both? If they are both trashed, it wont hurt to drill and pin it, (or weld it) but if only one is shot, I wouldnt destroy the other to accomodate it.

if its the foot shifter thats bad u can go to any atv store ( i went to a yamaha dealer lol) and order a new universal one that fits all the honda 200 motors (execpt the 200m) for $13.00. and it works great. i had to do this last week for the 250sx. the foot shifter stripped so i took the one off the 200s and put on it (it was a perfect fit) and order a new one for the 200s. got the new one on friday and them both runnin for the weekend.

The foot shifter hopefully stripped before the shift shaft ( softer metal ) if it's not too bad, remove the shifter, fold a piece of 80 grit sand paper and widen the gap on the shifter ( where the bolt goes in .. ) .
I've used vise grips in a bind ! LOL.. not recommended.

dont cobb it up, fix it right the first time...if you weld it you can burn the shaft seal and it will leak...and using a bolt will look horrible, but if it just a piece of junk beater go ahead and use the bolt trick....

no its not a beater. I never even checked to see what was stripped today. All I did was got a new bolt, put it throught the hole where the notch is, and than hammered it back futher out of the notch so it tightens up. than tightened he bolt. that held fine today so ill try that until it breaks again (wont be long)

I have seen guys that would grind a key way in the shaft and shifter put it together then use a square nail tap it in tighten it up and it will hold indefinately
