will a 1981 250r engine bolt in the frame of a 1984 250r and if so, do i have to use the 81 wiring harness with it or does that interchange also??

The shifter shafts are different, the 81-82 will hit the frame on a 83-84

Not exactly.... the shifter shift is longer on the 81-82 motors. It will NOT fit into the 83-84 frame w/o changing the shaft. The connections for and the CDI's themselves are different in the wiring harness.

PS - Posted at the same time there Blazer... didn't mean to repeat the info!

ok so what exactly will the shift shaft hit, can that part be bent at all to clear because i realy want to change frames becuase the 84 has way better suspention and brakes and the styling is way nicer.

It will hit the frame of the 83-84 frame, so you will need a shifter shaft out of a 83-84 motor. You can't really modify the frame to avoid this.

Zombie thread brought back...

Okay, so after attempting this same swap I ran into this same issue. Has anyone ever tried cutting the shaft shorter and making their own splines or use a pin to hold the shifter in place on the shaft? I have yet to find a 83-84 shaft for sale (second gen parts seem pretty hard to come by), and I would prefer not to tear the bottom end apart and pull the clutches. I'm considering cutting the shaft but would appreciate some other thoughts before I do this.

There is an aircooled 250r page on Facebook that might be helpful in finding the shifter shaft.

Sadly I don't have Facebook anymore. I decided because I don't have any use for the longer shaft since I don't have a first gen R I would try some redneck ingenuity. I hacked it off and put a pin in it... It seems to be holding fairly well! It also clears the second gen frame with ease now. I'll try and add some pictures of the hack job.

Did you have to use a diffrent shifter because on my 82 engine the shifter is diffrent

Yes, you have to use an 83-84 R shifter to match the frame, AND you have to replace the shifter shaft (81-82 R shaft is longer and won't fit in the frame)... OR you have to do what I did and cut down the 81-82 R shifter shaft. I cut mine with a cutoff wheel because I didn't have any use for the first gen shaft because I don't have a frame from those years... Either way you go you still need a different shifter... I wouldn't recommend cutting the shaft like I did, but they are hard to find and weren't cheap when found from what I remember.

(See the few posts directly above yours for explanation and pictures.)

Hope this helps!

To add to my previous post... if you notice in my third picture (sorry it's kind of close up) the 83-84 R shifter has a riser on it that takes it up and over the frame. The 81-82 shifter does not have that riser to my recollection. This is why you have to change the shifter as well.
