'THE SEAT IS MISSING THE PLASTICS ARE PRETTY POOR ,ONE TYRE IS PUNCTURED AND SECOND GEAR IS ABIT JUDDERY ,THE BACK BRAKE CYLINDER IS ALSO MISSING AND THE KICKSTART DOESN'T RETURN'

If 2nd gear is juddery, cant i replace second gear? or is it best to buy a whole new bottom end?

you can replace the gear. My uncle had to do it on my grandpa's 125 Suzuki ALT.

THE BACK BRAKE CYLINDER IS ALSO MISSING

doesn't surprise me it's missing.... if it's a 81R, should have rear drum brakes

Alot of "R" are missing back brakes why? "racing" front brakes get you in a corner too turn hard plus too stop rear brakes slow you down. if u get an "R" with no rear brakes thats why. rear brakes slow you down

o right. didnt know that.

anyone know what i can do with the kick start? just replace it?? or can it be fixed?
also can i fix 2nd gear or do i need whole new bottom end?

kando

you can replace 2nd gear or shifting fork alone, you won't need a whole bottom end.

Your going to have to tear it all apart first. you never know what else will be worn out in there, bearings should be replaced also if you have the money, I wouldn't want to take it all apart again over that.

Sounds like it'd be a much better parts bike for your 82R, then one to fix up.

raptor
02-28-2005, 03:50 AM
do you think that? is the problems that bad with it? is it not worth the try at fixing? or should i part the bike out and hope to get a bit of profit?

if you have a manuel, hell have at it! theres no better way to learn than to tear down a motor, i would personally fix it....just read your manuel how stuff should go back together ect ect it dosnt take long to have a bottem end apart on an R

How much did you pay for it? Was it in the $600 dollar range?

raptor
02-28-2005, 04:40 PM
it cost me $500 inc the guy bringing it to me!
He didnt tell me everything about it so there was a few hidious finds.

up top of page is hwat he said was wrong with it, and theres more, the thumb throttle sticks a bit because the wire leaving it pulls out and gets stuck.. very dangrerous! also the bolt from the petrol tank is missing.. theres cracks in the bottom case as you can see in the pics, now i dunno how to fix this?

hes also carved his zip code in to some places on the trike incase it got stolen.

and a few other bits im not happy with...

where do i start!!?!

also i dunno what year it is.... i think 82. as bruce said 81 have drum brakes.... theres no tag on the forks saying model..

350x'inNY
02-28-2005, 10:50 PM
REAR drums..... front is disc on both, and your front disc looks like an 81R along with your rear tank connection. The year is usually on the right stearing stem. Also, see if there's air scoops on the frame by the steaering stem... there were on 82R, not on 81R.

$500? Yikes..... I paid $650 for my 82R... all complete with extra tire/rims, extra front and rear plastics (OEM... had brand new Maier on it), fresh rebuild, silencer packing, and air filter! Oh... plus a bunch of extra 83-84R parts... and an extrra parts motor I picked up later for $50!!! :beer

Well if you decide to part it out let me know. Or start posting the parts on E-bay. I will definately get you started on making some of your money back. I'll buy the exhaust, front brake rotor and airbox/filter off ya. Probably even more parts because I'm still going through my '81 R. Luckily mine still has the rear brake drum on it and it works! $500 bucks....DOH! It looks like you got some rear tires off an '85 or 86 250R and some good ole homemade wiring too boot. I see you're from Springfield but no state in your signature.....Illinois?

Wickedfinger

Thats definately an '82 .... you can tell from the airbox, rear snorkle intake built into the frame, and the airscoops at the neck, let alone from the rear disk brake. Also, looks like it has an '83 or '84 (hopefully an '84 because of the better porting and higher compression) because of the black paint on the jug. If you were going to pick an engine for your first rebuild - I couldn't think of anything better than an early R or Blaster motor ........

Looks pretty rough, I cant say that I would fis it myself but I dont think there would be a better machine to lean some mechanical skills on that whats in front of you

Yardbird

Yeah I agree that's it an '82. Just went and compared the swinger on my '81 which has the drum brake and the '82 which has the disc. Yours is an '82 unless someone swapped out the swinger on it previously. Look on the steering stem for the year sticker if it's still got it. But I guess it really doesn't matter because you got some work ahead of ya. I would agree with My trike Sucks, 350x'inNY and Lomax that it's a great machine to learn and work on.

The first thing to do would be thoughly cleaning EVERYTHING.Then grease all the cables and bearings. Then look at what you have to work with. Tackle each problem ONE at a time.
