you could do the whole engine and transmaition, but for that i would recomemned a dremel because you can interchange tips to get into the fins, im starting a polished transmition on a different 200cc engine right now, and it looks awesome, in anyp ics that i post they dont come out good at all, there all blurry so you cant realy see them that good, but anywho ya just use a dremel if your going to do a engine and use sandpaper on the transmition.

oo fine steel wool is also excellent for getting the alum smooth i start with bix stripper put that on then start sanding with the stripper on with the oo fine steel wool takes the paint right off then i buff the part with mothers polish.

Heres my blaster clutch cover

Dont sand with anything that can leave deep scratch marks

right - e - o.... so use 320 sandpaper and get the paint off and whatever. then when do i start using the 3000 sandpaper?

will i need to clear coat it or doesnt it matter?

if someone can spare the time to do a little tutorial that will be fantastic!

This was a faq i did for blasterhq.com about how to do the clutch cover same thing can be applied to other alum stuff

2003 yamaha Blaster clutch cover polishing .

Tools Needed:
3/8 Drive Ratchet
12mm and 14mm Socket
12mm open end wrench
5mm allen key socket or allen key
Mothers aluminum mag wheel polish
001 fine steel wool
p1500 grit super fine sandpaper wet and dry
Total time 1 hour
Not pictured sandpaper or 001 fine steel wool
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid92/p79dda61c57723975abd58e1c63a26d9a/fa5797a9.jpg

step 1:
Remove rear heel guard bolt with your ratchet and 12 mm socket
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid92/pa81beed3dd35bcb904a1c2baed21ef08/fa5797b8.jpg

Step 2:
Using your 5 mm allen key place it in the front bolt of the foot peg ,then place your 12mm wrench on the bolt behind the foot peg while holding the 12mm wrench lossen the 5 mm allen bolt"be sure to use a 5mm and not a size 5 sae allen key because these are very tight and will strip easy" do the same for the second bolt.

Step 3:
Pop The lower heel guard from the upper heel guard loose by hand
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid92/p1341fefed9edeba204a01ae8f7bbece0/fa5797b3.jpg

Step 4:
Remove the 2 bolts that attach the brake assembly to the frame with your ratchet and 14 mm socket"these were very tight"
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid92/p856fef7c178301347b9fb3a12714baeb/fa5797b1.jpg

Step5:
Remove only the top of the brake spring by hand and let the brake assembly hang back out of the way so u can access the clutch cover
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid92/p084c479a94c17dd8dd43ad77f792707b/fa5797ad.jpg

Step 6: Take a cup and fill it with strip x stripper"i bought mine at wal mart" the reason i used strip x was because its thick and dosent run, next take a small paint brush or a piece of sponge and dip it in the stripper and apply to the clutch cover"only get the stripper on the parts u want to polish dont get it inside the words yamaha let that sit for a few minutes then apply again till you get a nice thick coat on the cover,i went and eat dinner and came out about 20 minutes later ull notice the paint has bubbled up take a rag and wipe the black way.
pic below is after i wiped the stripper off
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid92/p661348922c5d0b44f0da5941642078a9/fa5797aa.jpg

Step 7:
Take your 1500 grit wet and dry paper and wet it and start to sand the cover in a circular motion after a few minutes of sanding wipe of the cover, what your looking for is any imperfections in the cover "mine had 3 or 4 knicks above the word yamaha" sand again till all imperfections are gone ,at this point you should pretty much be able to see it shine with little to no scratchs in the aluminum.

Step :8
Take your 001 fine steel wool and start scrubing in the same circular motion as when u were sanding now you really start to see it shining after a few minutes of doing that wipe it clean and it should look really shiny, then take your mothers mag polish on a rag and begin to rub it on hard keep rubbing till the mothers turns black, next i used a dremel with a buffing wheel on it and buffed till it shined,u can use a clean rag it just take a little more arm work now it should be shining bright.
Optonial u can spray the clutch cover with clear coat that way it will allways shine but clear coat likes to bubble when sprayed on aluminum id use a acrilyic clear spray 1 coat wait for about 20 seconds then another coat buffing out the clear will also help

Step 9:
Now just reverse the disassembly process and reassemble,i didnt use any tape or anything to cover the yamaha words or around the edge of the covers just becareful and take your time if u drip some on a spot other then the cover just wipe it off this stripper is instant.

This is your finshed product

I dunno why all the pics wont show up here u can try right clicking on the red x and click on show picture.

polishing works on alum ,if u did steel it would rust unless u tryed clearcoating, i didnt remove the case and on the yamaha but did on the atc 70 the words yamaha didnt get stripper in them because that stripper x is thick like snot lol it dosent run

The steel will rust if the bare metal is exposed alum wont rust if left bare.

i polished up my rewind and thats to the bare steel, so all i did was just spray clear coat over it so it wouldnt rust.

DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY BUT IF YOU WANT IT DONE THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE SEND IT TO G-KING POLISHING,VERY VERY RESONABLE COST AT THAT,PLUS FAST TURN AROUND TIME TOO.
IF YOU WANT A SUPER SHOW POLISHED MOTOR IT HAS TO BE DONE WITH A (BIG) MACHINE, NOT WITH JUST SAND PAPER.................RIDE ON.

All caps is considered yelling as I'm sure you know and is completely unnecessary. Using the wrong forum to plug yourself is also unnecessary. Also, if you do some searches you'll find that there's a long list of members that have done some great polishing jobs by hand and didn't need a machine to do it for them.
