I'm slowly putting together a speedo set up for my 250R and have everything I need except the speedo drive that mounts on the axle. Do any of you have a part number for the drive piece? Or maybe have an extra drive to sell? I tried for the one that came with the speedo on ebay today but quit bidding at $190. The winner got it for $192.50. Ouch! Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hmmmmm..... I guess I got outbid then.

I do NOT have a right drive gearbox. They do NOT have part numbers on them. You need to turn them like they are on a hub, and see which side makes it turn "clockwise" for the speedo cable.

They ARE discontinued... as kits and as individual parts from what I can gather. Left drive gearboxes seem to be easier to come by than the right side. There are different size gearboxes as well for different type of hubs. I have pictures I will attach when I get home.

Now.... that wouldn't be "numbers correct"! I'm miffed cause I would have had a complete speedo setup for all my HONDA trikes w/that auction.
Wait to you all see my 81/82R speedo setup! :naughty: And the speedo/tach combo I'm working on on the Showgirl! :naughty: :naughty:

How do you tell the difference between a left and a right sided one? I have a drive and the speedometer mounting bracket here from I'm pretty sure, a '83-'85 200x.

Put it up on end so you look at the cable connection, and put the plate towards the side of the hub with the tab. Now rotate the plate in the same direction the hub would go "forward" If the speedo cable slot turns clockwise, then that is the correct side. (L or R) If it's turning counterclockwise, then it would go onto the other side of the hub. Again... I'll post up some pics when I get home....

SOOOOOooooooo...... for an example 83-85 200X, (for dirtface) the brakes are on the "Right", so the speedo should mount on the "Left". So if I put the rotating plate with the notch in it towards the Hub, and turn it as if the hub was going forward, the piece the cable attaches to turns clockwise. This would be a "Left side" gearbox.

If I try to put a "Leftside" gearbox on a 350X, it is basically reversed direction. The brakes are on the Left on a 350X, and the speedo tab is on the right. Thus, when you drive forward, the cable turns counterclockwise and doesn't turn the speedometer head. Basically looks good, but only records distance and speed if you are going backwards! A 350X uses what I call a "Rightside" gearbox. Only the 350X, 85-86R and from what ClayW has told me, the 250SX/ES have the "Rightside" gearbox. Also, there seems to be 2 styles for different hubs.... and not sure yet, but possible different calibrations for different tire heights??? 22" versus 23½"??? (5-7% difference in circumference, so I'd assume they'd a made gearing calculations for that)

hey sandman
check out the photo......
the gearbox has 'HA2' stamped on the inside
and the cable has 85 ha2-870 printed on it.....

Huh... I'lll be..... maybe HONDA got smarter later in the run.

I got mint NIP speedo kits for 110/185/200/200E and another NIP one for 81/82R, and neither gearbox's have any ID's on them. My 350X kit was NIB too, but it's mounted on the Showgirl... the pics I took when I installed never had that side of the gearbox showing for sure.

Bruce, in the last picture with the fork, there is a bracket that the cable goes down through and it has two holes. Is that bracket part of the speedometer kits? Because I have one of those here too.

Yeah... what HE said! Egg Zack LEE! :D Maybe it was a British thing? hahhaa

I did see that one of mine here has a "1" on it, and the other has a "2" on it in a different spot, but they ar eboth Left side drives and both 22" tires.

Depends.... if it looks like the one on the towel, YES. If the "Loop" is perpendicular to the 2 mounting holes, it's probably for the top of the triple tree for the front brake line on a 350X/ 85-86R.

hey bruce
i have checked another gearbox i've got and it does'nt have any thing printed on the inside either....... i got the 250r gearbox from canada '2ndgear' on ebay ....it was listed under 110,200, gearbox but you could see it was for the right side and you could just make out the 'HA2' printed on the side ...... :D

Errrrrrrrr.... that coulda been me! That's who I got the 110/185/200/200E kit from. Good score ol'chap! I also got a NIP Honda 250R fairing mounting kit ($1) :p .... now comes the task of finding a fairing! :wondering

Now what does that second one you have pictured go to? That looks like the one that came with my sealed 110/185/200/200E kit. I use to think I could tell "which side" until I actually tested the "spare" one I had here. It looks exactly like my 350X speedo gearbox AND the 81/82R speedo gear box.... however, it won't work on my 350X cause it turns the wrong way! Same case, but the "inards" are setup backwards! The cable is leading axle on the 350X.... same case.... trailing axle on the 81/82R.

I wonder why these 110,185, 200 kits seem to be so plentiful. You would think the SX, ES, 250R and 350X would be more common. Weird.

Well.... you got to think backwards sometimes..... these are "NOS" in most cases.... inventory that hasn't moved/been liquidated. The 350X/250R/200X stuff has long sold.... now what's showing up is what fits trikes that had a lesser demand to their speed.

Ive got one that was advertised as being for a 85/86 250R, thought it might work on my 350X. When I got it, I found "HA0" stamped in ink on it. HA0 is the 250es code, so it is for 25" tire.

Find me a 350X one and I will trade stright across. This one should work on the 350X, the calibration would just be off. I got a mint ATC speedo head off of ebay, and I will slowly work on settig it up.

ATCnut.... the guy you bought your speedo head off from emailed me about another one he had. It has 00273 miles on it, but looks brand new! :w00t:

I got another speedo drive/mounting bracket/cable guide in the mail today... thanks to someone on the board here! :D Anyhow.... it's a 200X or a 83/84R one. BUT..... I had an idea from TravEX... his 350X had basically the forks/hub mounted backwards.... If you did that, you could mount the speedo on a 350X on the "Left" then, and it'd work! Might even work on your 250SX Clay??? :welcome:

The one I got is mint, how much will it take to get the other one out of him??

I also have a Hondaline drive unit kit for 110/185s/200/200e. I took the gear box out and it is for the left side. I spun both gear boxes and counted the number of times the speedo cable turned. For the HA0 box (for the 250es, 25" tires), 10 turns of the wheel resulted in 26 5/8 turns of the cable. For the other box, (for trikes with 22" tires) 10 turns of the wheel resulted in 24 3/8 turns of the cable. If someone with a 200x/250R/350X box could count the ratio, I am very interested.

I see how these boxes come apart, the next step might be exploratory surgury. I want to see how they make the direction different, might be able to convert one.

Anyone that has a 200x/250R/350X that they would let go send me a email. ATCnut@comcast.net

Been there... DID that! I can see it here as I type! It was a lot cheaper than the one you bought.. I'll leave it at that!

I've got a 200X/83/84R one that I got awhile ago that was froze up. I drowned it in WD-40 and it turns now, but still catches some in reverse. I can see the outer ring that comes off, but what about the rest of it? Is there a ring in there I'm not seeing??

I'll try to count up the revolutions on the 82R one and the 2 other ones I have here. The 350X one is mounted, will take me longer to get to it!

I can see a snap ring on the inside. I have not tried to disassemble one yet. Ill take pics when I do.
