when i try to kickstart my 250es sometimes it catches, but most of the time i hear a winding noise and it doesnt turn over.
is this common, or is this a problem?
the electric start has been done away with so this is only way
i know to start it also i havent been able to start it at all since i got it
it has spark and sems to have compresion when the kickstart engages?
any advice will be muchly appreciated.

Sounds like the kicker gears might be worn out. My old 250SX had this issue and would only engage everyonce in awhile. I would see about getting the electric start fixed so you wont have to deal with this problem.

mine does this too.. quite common with the big red ES's and the SX's.

Electric start is an awsome thing ... look on e-bay for the setup, get a good battery and live happy and prosper !! The Clymer manual covers this, if you decide to tear into it.. make sure you got a manual !

The kick starter not engaging problem is most likely caused by the one-way clutch going bad. This is a very common problem on the 250cc ( 4 strokes ).
