1985 Honda 250 SX What u think?

I was just curious what everyone thinks of the 1985 Honda 250 SX. Im looking at one that runs like crap "stalls out alot" but is allmost all there and its not in to bad a shape. I would like another Three Wheeler and wanted to get a Honda due to its easier to get parts for them. Is $500.00 a good price for a 90% complete, crappy runing, halfway decent looking 85 250 SX?

i personally think they are a very good if not a great trike. basically a sport version of the 250 bigred.

I have had two of them and have got rid of both, and wish I hadn't. They are a great all around bike and well worth $500. If in decent shape,and probably just needs a tune-up wich usually doesn't cost alot.

I'll second Johns reply. It is a great cruising bike with the electric start and reverse. Mine is the first bike I grab now when it snows out.

It's usually just the carburetor that needs a good cleaning when it's running poorly. Make sure that that rear end is tight, check the fluid color and look at the driveshaft boot. If any water got in there avoid buying it. Good differentials are even harder to find than a good woman. Make sure it shifts well also. SX forks bend easy and the footpeg bolts get corroded and snap off so check that stuff too.

Meat, sounds like a great project to me. Something you could put a little money into and have a great rider. Some nice mud tires and a little tune up should handle it.

I'll second everything that Steve said and add that they are a wonderful trike but depending on what needs fixing they can cost you quite a bit and parts ARE getting harder to come by. Use your head and buy it right.

If you dont have a sport bike they are the next best thing to ride. And fun as hell to jump.

I love my three and the only way id get rid of one is in a trade for a 350x, 250r or maybe a 200x.

Don't get me wrong....I love my 250R to death but.....
My '85 250SX has Electric start, shaft drive, reverse, smooooth ride, reliable...ahh....talk about sweet.
All the "creature comforts" AND it has plenty of get-up-and-scoot for most situations.

I say go for it.
The problem you mention is probably something simple.....dirty carb.

Awsome trikes. automatic, reverse, .. ... .. ... all adds up to a great trike.

I find it has a higher centre of gravity, but also more ground clearance than the hardtails, once you get used ot it it's great, way more power than the 200 's and sportier looking than the bigred, however almost mechanically identical.

Yeah, mine never wanted to idle, one day I flipped it, and it stayed upside down idling, go figure!

they are great 3 wheelers but only geared for 55...and being shaft drive you cant change the gearing

My wife and I have an 85 & 86 sx. Great machines, and I believe that certain parts off a trx 300 are interchangable,like hubs, pivot bolts,pegs,and you can even put a 300 engine in a sx.Both of our sx's are in need of TLC and when they are done,you'll see us at tughill,and any place located around saratoga n.y.

i have a 250es and as far as i know its the same thing no racks they wanted 500 for mine when i got it it didnt run had half a front fender one rear one i ended up just trading a kawasaki air compressor and mossburg 501a shot gun for mine but i love the bike now mine will idle when its cold but wont once it warmed up at least not for more then like half a minute unless you turn the gas off iv clened that carb like 10 times and put a rebuild in it i dont know what the problem with that is but im sure you will be happy with it only real complain about mine is its like it needs another gear just tops out to fast and screams for another gear

Yep sounds like a good deal. It is a basically a Big Red...all they did was change the gearing, different plastic and I think it has a smidge more suspension. It's a GREAT bike!

I have a trx300 '89 engine in my 2nd 250sx (check my signature, not that ya can tell or maybe you can...I'm no expert) I bought it that way and recently fixed her up runs like a beast with those big paddle tires on it. I have had the engine off and noticed that the bottom mount has been modified on the frame - half removed.
The only other thing I notice is that the top mount is not there. But she is firmly in place with the other 3 mounts.

the sx is my favorite trike ever made, they can go through anything snow, mud, sand, and they got great power. just make sure that all discontinued parts are ok like the front axel when i bought mine it was all seized up and its hard as hell to fix.

Love mine go for it. Indy, funny you say that. is that a confirmed 55mph for all sx rear ends? Cause mine is modded pretty well (including running a 155 main jet) but only has 20s on the back and I havent yet swapped my 350x carb to it and I'm topped out at exactly 55mph withmy 220lb self on it. I figured the bigger carb and some 22s and cutting back on the rice and gravy would increase my top end. Not that I race but its fun tweak.
