Have you ever tried to list something more expensive like you would list in the paper? I sold a dirt bike on eBay about 5 years ago for $800; it cost almost $70 in fees!! That would have cost me $20 in my local paper. EBay gets listing fees and a fee based on the selling price. As much as I can complain I still sell stuff on there. Sure I won't sell a whole machine again but you can't find a place to list parts that will get more people looking at them.

I can say this with confidence-you WILL NOT get the price for your item locally that you will on Ebay.
So you're paying a fee for millions of folks to see it.

A week long newspaper ad here is $26.
You deal with a bunch of phone calls that get you nowhere and if you're lucky you get a joy rider or two with NO intention of buying or they try and low ball you.

Ebay-you get e-mails that are easy to answer and take up 500% less time than meeting with the joy riders.

It cost me $62 to sell my X almost a month ago on Ebay.
A car is at least $80.
