Here she is. She looks as good or better than I thought. I will go ahead and get new OEM plastic front fender and rear plus new fork boots.

Can anyone tell me who makes the best reproduction graphics. I recall that Dammit! said that one guy's were too big.

Any help would be great. Here are some pics!

Here are few more...

I am going to some paint touch up, ,etc. and once I get her almost perfect then I'll get some pics in the sun.

I think it's 4. That's who I got mine from. They look great but not sized accurately. The rear fender ATC250R decal is shorter than normal (still fits and looks fine) but the front fender sticker is a little too long and doesn't fit right.

Edit: with them all standing up like that they remind me of seals. :)

Are you going to get this one dirty?

If Hanke 4's are too long...who makes some that fit right?

There has to be someone

Just dusty...like yours gets....but Mud?

Hell no....never. I hate riding in mud anyway. Dunes and dust are fine with me.

I have given the thing about 4 baths in Armor All...till its dripping wet. The thing soaks it all up. I guess 20 years in the dry So-Cal heat will do that to a trike. At the same time it kept it rust free.

Dammit,

I will be to 250R's what Tom Batts is to 350x's....ha ha!!

One thing I noticed already. it seems alot shorter than my Tri z and alot lighter. The things is piece of cake to move around the garage.

I don't know. I'm sure someone on here does though. I remember somebody talking about it.

I'm thinking about drastically changing the look of my R. Kinda torn on it though. Can't make up my mind.

I love your 'R' man. Its classic...but I will say that some white on the R may look good.

What about the 87 look, but with a red seat?

Dammit!
01-18-2005, 02:38 AM
Didn't have any white in mind. I have a couple different schemes in mind but they're nothing like stock at all.

I would check to make sure OEM decals are not available before you go buying some reproductions. I have all the frame decals plus a few others but they are reproductions. Mine are 100% correct size and colors though.

Darius1502
01-18-2005, 04:22 AM
Actually all the OEM's are available except the front fender decal. The shroud decals are just more expensive then the repro's.

My decals are mint...but since they are old they crack easy and it looks like some pieces of them have flaked off. I know right now that I'll change the rear fenders for sure.

Do the fork boots look dark to anyone. I think when they get older they get darker. I will likely sell these on ebay and then buy some OEM's.

I bought some of Hanke4's 86 style "HONDA 250R" shroud decals just because I have Maier shrouds on my R. I was happy with the decal quality. They were just almost too big to fit on the Maier shrouds. I have no idea how that compares to stock shrouds and stock decals.

So you can actually still get FACTORY shrouds AND decals for an 86 ATC250R right? And in RED plastic, not black? :Bounce

Oh yeah, Darius, that's a beatiful R! But you just payed too darn much for it!

;) Just Kidding! :p

when storing the trike up right like that do you need to drain the gas and oil? i am looking to gain a bit of room on the garage.

raptor
01-18-2005, 10:26 AM
i have learnt to tip it upright you have to turn the petcock to off. so no gas flows. if the gas tank is full it will leak out a bit.

petrol will leak out of your carb but only a bit from the overflow. hope this helps

That is a nice looking R.

Darius1502
01-18-2005, 01:36 PM
Thanks guys. The thing is really mint. I am amazed when looking at it how low hours it has.

I'll get as many OEM stickers as possible. The front fender hardly even has a scratch on it. The rear fenders have a few little nicks here and there. The tank is 99% perfect. No fading and still shines.

Its incredible to look at. Even the OEM grips with the weights on the end of the bars (to limit vibration) are still on! All warning stickers are intact.

Have you tried Harlan Lyne? (sp) He's oldman here on 3ww. He makes some awesome factory reproduction. I've helped him get scans and sent him some originals to work with. A1 stuff... right dimensions and OEM quality ++

Hey Darius,

That bike's a beauty, I've got to say. You beat me to it, as I was actually toying with the idea of buying it when it was on eBay. Nice one! For what it's worth, I'd leave the bike just the way it is, as it looks beautiful and is better than 99% of the bikes out there.

If I were you, I'd stockup on the NOS OEM stuff, but leave it as it is with all the factory original parts on it. Seriously, it's so rare these days to find an unmolestored original in such good condition. In my book, the patina iteself is worth more than a restoration and is irreplacable. Buy the new bits and store them away before Honda discontinue them as that way, you have the best of both worlds. Just my two pence worth. :beer .

Cheers,
Jez

Good point and thanks for the input.

I am going to just change to rear fenders for factory originals and then udate the decals with originals as well.

Thanks and as soon as I am done I'll put pics up. Don't worry I am not going to mess with the factory look.

Hey Darius, SWEEEEEEEEEEET R man!!!!!!!

Darius1502
01-18-2005, 08:23 PM
Patrick...I don't know where to get another one. I looked for about 2 years for this one. I will tell you that if you find one scoop it up fast. Even if its listed on eBay...find out what the seller wants and buy it. If the price is right move and MOVE FAST.

I bought this one sight unseen but just trusted the pictures. The pictures did not lie. There are a few things that I did not see in the pics...but they are minor:

- Run/Off red switch is missing so to stope the bike you put it in gear
- the front brake needs bleeding.
- The front rim has a couple scrapes
- Of course the frame needs some paint by the welds, etc.

Other than that is pretty much mint, but will get better through time as I fix all these little issues.

I just called the dealer who sold it to me and he said that there was a knob on the RUN Switch.

Apparently the RUN/OFF switch knob was knocked off during shipping, the headlight gaurd was scratched and gouged, and the front brake line was tweeked so now the front brake does not work. I'll need an new front brake line it looks like.

Glad I got insurance!

Lesson to all....if you ever ship something....pay extra for Insurance!!

If you want to venture slightly away from OEM, steel braided brake lines are worth the money. Been wanting to do that front and rear on mine for ages but I never get around to it.

Dude that garage floor is so slippery with Armor All if you walk in there I'll fall on my ass. Between the smell of Armor All and gasoine...you'll get so high that won't be able to sleep for 3 days.

Its happened to me.

Armor All really messed up my plastic after I used it on my fenders. Sure it looked great at first but after the first couple rides the oil base trapped dirt in my new oem fenders and the original factory shine became very dull.

Darius1502
01-19-2005, 03:42 AM
Yeah...I don't put it on my new stuff.

Only the older stuff. My Tri Z has OEM plastic that brand new. I use very little on that trike. I do find that that the plastic is less likely to scratch if there is armor all on it.

who knows?

I was feeling left out so I cleaned it up today and snapped a few shots. They could almost be twins. :)

Ran out of armor all before i got to the tires.

Got a brand new front tire sitting in the garage waiting to be put on. :D
