I was wondering what tools I would need and the best way to split the cases on a motor (tri-z).I have it down to the cases but i dont know what to use to hold the clutch.I know they make a clutch holding tool and was wondering how effective it is? thanks in advance for your input

just put a ratchet extension through the connecting rod while it is at bottem dead center, so when you go to take the clutch nut off the crank is staying still....get what i mean>?

Welcome to the boards, when you have a trike question you should post it in trikesylvaina. I've moved this one for you. You should find the help you need here.
I have a vise-grip type clutch holder tool that works great. It will also hold flywheels and gears.
To split the cases, you need a case splitter tool. It's basically a bar that bolts to the flywheel cover holes in the case and has a bigger center screw that will push on the crank and push the cases apart.
If I'm understanding you, I don't think that putting something through the small end of the rod would hold a back up on the clutch nut. With the clutch disassembled (springs, pressure plate and fiber/metal plates removed) the center part of the clutch is no longer connected to the crank and if the engine is out of the frame or in the frame with the chain off then the tranny and center part of the clutch will just free spin, even though the crank is backed up by the extension through the rod.
But that will work for taking the nut off the drive gear that bolts directly to the crank.

I go about it the rdneck way and gently use a flathead screwdriver and a very small light weight hammer and tap around it. Has always worked for me.

I tap on them GENTLY with a deadblow mallet to initially free them, then use a screw driver being careful not to scrape the inside of the case.
