How to adjust timing chain on 185s?

I read how to do it, but i don't understand. at an idle, you take the bolt out of the adjuster nut, and then loosen the nut a little bit, and it it's supposed to automatically tighten? or do i tighten the nut a bit, and then put the bolt back in?
