Hello i was working on my trike today (86 250r atc) and noticed that my air boot had a crack in it and that i also needed a new air filter so instead of just replaceing them both i think im just going to get an after market air filter and take off my air box. because those air filters go staight onto the carb right? i was looking around for them but all i found were stock with airbox replacements does any one know where i can get an aftermarket air filter to take off the airbox? and for those of you who have already taken off your airboxes what improvements does it have? and after i take the airbox off will i still be able to ride it in the snow and through small puddles n stuff? thanks

You'll have to make an adapter of sorts. A piece of PVC pipe that's the same diameter as your carb and a small bit of hose that will fit over them. Hose goes on the carb, then the pvc pipe, then you connect the air filter to the pvc pipe. The filter will end up sort of next to the rear shock. I don't know of a specific part number for the proper filter. You'll probably just have to match it up (smallest one that will fit on the pvc pipe).
I just ordered this complete kit.

Comes with everything you need to run without the airbox. Edit: Actually I would call them up and ask if they'll sell just what you need to eliminate your airbox for a reasonable price.
As for performance benefits, there really is no benefit above and beyond what running with no lid would provide. It just improves air flow (and you should re-jet to compensate). If you ever ride in wet conditions, I would recommend just getting a new boot and leaving your airbox alone. You can still order a new K&N filter for an '86 R from rockymountainatv.com for fairly cheap. They're the kind that mount inside the airbox.

If you look at it this way:
It wont run any better
you will have to rejet
if it gets wet, it runs like trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro
IT CAN GET WET
its hard to get one that fits
results in more engine wear due to filter being exposed to more dirt
So why would you bother. Why do you think that Honda decided that the air box was the way to go? BECAUSE ITS THE BEST!
Stick with what you have. A K&N in the airbox. Build a carrybox for your camera, its wont be that hard.
