I am looking to turn my 83r into a 480r so i can keep up with the newer quads but i need to know some stuff. First off i was looking at pics of the cr480 and the motor looks really tall. Will fit into the 83r frame? and if so what other mods need to be done? motor mounts? pipe? what other stuff?
Thanks for all your help.

yes the motor will fit you need a 82-83 480, you have to make new motor mounts and a custom pipe has to be made, it is also advised that you go over the frame gusset n brace it up some, extend the swinger, i am currently tacklin this project dont get the motor till the 15th, when i do get it ill let you know more :)

theres no diffrence really, just they only made them for like 2 years 83' 84' years i think, they gota be RIGHT side chain drive, as for the extended swinger your gona have to search high and low on ebay and everywhere or just extend it yourself which is what im gona do

MTS

yes they are, they are known for there ungodly amounts of toque for the bottem-midrange but then they kinda fall flat on there face on the top.....im going to fix this problem when i build mine get all done out and a good pipe heh

:wondering i didn't know that they were 4 speeds  what would you have to do with the gearing to make it have a good topend speed?
front sprocket?
rear sprocket?

Thanks for all the help.

it really depends on how you build the motor or if your gona leave it stock, stock gearin for it is 14/52 which gives you alot of posibilitys to play with, also when you have the pipe built it will change the whole tune of the motor, the stock 480r pipes where kinda skinny lookin for a 2 stroke if you ask me lol

just about any swingarm builder should be able to make you a swingarm , i just wonder about the choice of motor why not use the water cooled engine? course i guess you use what you have

the water pumpers have left side chain drive, air's are left among other things there is one water pumper that i have seen in a air coold frame and it was a early cr250 with the right side chain drive....as for the swing-arm, if you can weld and use a grinder, you can extend a honda swing arm there like the easiest swinger to extend ;) :D

I'm thinking the 480cc aircooled would be killer in a 83/84R. The power is awsome and they are reliable. Here's a link; http://www.off-road.com/dirtbike/hon/cr48083.html
The write-up says there a five speed trans.
Looks like alot of 480cc stuff is still avalible, like aftermarket clutches, reed's, gskt's ectt.
I hear that the 480 kicker lever is a weak area.
There would be a few things about converting one into a trike though. Theres no lighting coil in the stator for your headlight.
Then you would need the wiring, cdi, coil, and electronics.
Then the kick starter would be motorcycle style. So you would need to remove the rear fender assy. to start it.
I've seen a few pic's and a article on the 480/trike. They all had something other than a factory fuel tank. I was thinking it was manditory for cleance, but was told by Mr atc that a factory tank will work.
Motor mounts should be somewhat easy, but the factory air box would be tough to use. Then the expansion chamber/pipe is another story.
Anyway it sound like a great project. Good luck and keep us updated..................... :beer

The right drive waterpumper was an 83 CR250 motor. I think if I was doing a convertion that's the direction I'd go. They both sound cool.

so the 83cr 250 motor was right side drive? How hard do you think it would be to find a motor like that? what way do you guys think would be best to go? 83cr 250 or 83cr 480? what motor is easyer to find and still has a good amount of parts available?

Thanks

That's my delema also. Plus add a 300cc kit to the mix. I'll probily end up with a stock 250 air-cooled ..lol.
Seems like a water-cooled cr250 would be more involved with the cooling system added to the other drawbacks desribed in the 480 reply.
Good luck...........................

heh thats like one of the main reasons im not fooling with the waterpumper in this frame, getting all the coolin stuff mounted and what not would be more work+ the fact if i wanted a 250r pumper i would just buy one to begin with, im going with the 480r becuse its simple air cool'd and theres no replacement for displacement! :D :TrikesOwn

theres no replacement for displacement! :D :TrikesOwnTechnology seems to be defeating that statement everyday. I bet an equally worked modern CR250 motor(2000+ year) would turn out similar hp. To be honest, I think that it would be sweet to be able to say you had a 480R.

I might be able to help you with that. Email the guy and see how far he is from Gladstone. I could put it in a rubbermaid container and ship her up there.

I picked up a 82 CR480 in the junkyard today. All the motor is there, and a little electrical. No carb, but the slide is still attatched to the cable. The reeds and intake boot is still there, along with a ratty old pipe. It looks like it used to be a sand dragger. It has like +12 swinger extensions on it, and a homemade huge chain guard and has an aluminum strut. Still has a 10 paddle, huge paddle tire on back. There is a lot of dust on it, and bird poo, so I thinks its been sitting in a barn.
I think Ill try converting the bike into a trike. If its like the water pumpers, I can swap out parts from the trees, and have the 3 wheeler front tire. I probably wont mess with a rear fender, because plans are to paint it all flat black, and look like a beat up old air cooler. :)
I havent tore into the motor yet to see if its locked up or anything. The kicker isnt catching at all either.

So share some 480 info with CHAIN.. hehehe Im gonna slowly build this thing up as a sand draggin trike.
