1.) Any rear suspension mods for a 81-82R? Any other shocks to swap in? (I probably should have bought that White Bros shock from Skippy when I had the chance ) Extended swinger worth anything?

2.) I know 83-84 R hubs work to get a 4-110mm, any other hubs work to gain some width?

3.) I won a FTZ racing head from Howard on ebay. Any info on FTZ?? Will the heads interchange between 81-82 and 83-84R motors? Exhaust flange the same?? When I install this head, any guidelines to other adjustments in regards to carb/exhaust/airbox I should make? I got a DG Pipe and some other aftermarket pipe ??? at my disposal. Currently, I rebuilt the carb with a Keyster Carb kit from Howard and went back to stock airbox (UNI filter) and stock exhaust chamber.

4.) 200xman. You still going to send me that "special" part?? :D

5.) Any changes in the wiring harness between a 81-82R and a 83-84R? Same motor, but any other differences in the wiring?

6.) I read in the Tecate Sieze thread about temp difference effecting 2-storkes more... What adjustments do I need to think about for winter riding? BTW, I have jets +/- 2 sizes on hand for adjustments. I tuned it with "the banned and nameless" pretty well this summer. (I know... internet, sight unseen diagnostics bits, but general trends is what I'm looking for...)

Thanks again! This is my first 2-stroke and it has a fresh rebuild and I don't want to mess it up!

You got the rest of the stuff for 200xmans special part? I got mine today, its sweet, same company that made the YT175 rear suspension. wicked nice cast and machined aluminium part. NICE. Guess I will have to move the Z out to install some new parts on the oldschooler. The motors are Identical all 4 years, except for small porting improvements over the years. I woulda held out for a DG head. You want some suspension work, give me a call, my boy can rebuild that shock into anything you want.

I got a spare stock 82R rear shock here. The one on my R feels dead and has only like 4½" of travel. Your 'boy' can rebuild the stock shock? Anything about increasing travel?

No... I haven't got the 'special' part yet. Not sure if we are talking about the same thing or not. hahaha

For $30, I figured I couldn't go wrong with the FTZ head! Ity looks brand new and was freshly powder coated the 81-82R red.

Thank Holic!

Bruce, use 300ex hubs and you will get about an extra 2"s. I guess you changed your mind about that special part? Sounded like you didn't want it last time. I wanted to see if you had a couple of parts but I cant remember what they were now. Shoot me a p.m. with your address and maybe I can think of the parts by then.

easy rebuild of the stocker, as far as making it longer?? you would have to ask him. As long as the shaft aint rusted, its not expensive............

I saw that FTZ head, but it just looked like a milled stocker to me. The DG head has nice thick cooling fins to dissapate heat better and I would assume smaller dome to add compression. I was afraid that head would just cause more heat and any added power would soon be gone.

The 300/400ex hubs are a great upgrade like 200xman said.

Not sure what you mean by the exhaust flange, but mine looks real similar to 85 and up. If that's the case, a nice billet piece for a TRX would work great.

I really doubt you'll be able to pick up much travel out of the rear with the shock setting straight up and down like it does. I have seen some nice 200x front swaps, though.

The westcoast swingarm has multiple mounting points that would allow a longer shock.

Amen Holic.... definitely keeping the 22" fatty up front... especially since I got a speedo kit to put on it! :naughty:

Todd.... pm sent to ya....

I know where I can get an extended swinger, 2" maybe... looks home made hobjob though... however, it would move the base of the shock back a couple inches so it's not as straight up and down.

I don't know, cause the auction never showed the top/fins on this head. Howards good people... I take his word on it. Any feed back about FTZ???
I don't recall them, but I was 10 when the 82R came out... and I was riding a new 82 Big Red at the time! :TrikesOwn Had a brand new 82 200E and a 83 200E when I was in 4th and 5th grade on the farm!

Freak... you should be happy that I finally sent you out that DG Pipe! We'll let you know about the "special part" when you need to know... like after you get smoked a couple times at the drags by Holic and Todd at TF05 :w00t: (I still can't get a good launch off the line... )

Meanwhile... back at the ranch and the original topic... anyone else have some answers to my questions?

Thanks!

The CDI boxes are different on the '83 and '84 compared to the ones on the '81 and '82 so the harness would have a different connector to the CDI.

I won a shock from Skippy on Ebay, I'll let you know how it works. Dirtwheels this month did a tribute article on the 81 R, did you see it. Have you tried out the progressive springs in the front? I've been wondering if I should pick up a set for the 82. but with that fat tire I wonder if they would work at all.

I love the Progressive front fork springs. I have them on both my 350X's and the R. Which shock did you win from Skippy? He had 2 up recently. I think the White Bros one looked closer to stock than the other one.

He had one listed as a White Bros, cause I was searching around their website trying to see if I could figure the application. Hey... was just going by the auction listing!

Now Freak... where'd you find a 300R kit? Did I tell you I got a 300R head here as a paper weight? I like the straight up cooling fins! Holds papers pretty nice. I almost had a 300R jug a couple times. I know someone that I bought parts off recently that has a 300R kit still in the Hondaline box... :naughty: :naughty:
