rear ends should be the same, I beleive the dirve shaft is too. I want to get sx gears for my big red but they are pricey.

Yes, they will swap. Direct bolt on. I dont know about it having a different gear ratio, but it will bolt up. :beer

85 and 86 are different btw !

the 85 has a different driveshaft lengh after the u-joint than the 86 and 87.

edit: just re-read the post.. don't know about the gearing in the rear end tho !

we talked about the gearing about a year ago on here and if i'm not mistaken we determined that the gearing change in the sx/es is done in the tranny. the sx having slightly taller gearing or saying it this way ,,, the es
( bigreds ) are geared slightly lower.
the drive shaft set up is different from sx to es modles as well.

The 1985, 86, & I believe the 87 are different but will still bolt into to your frame. Just be sure to get the whole rear end brakes and all you will be in good shape. Some people say the brakes on the 86 & 87 are far superior than the 85 and last time I checked the brake drum was still available from Honda. That is the biggest thing you will have problem with is find a drum that is not out of spec.

Jeswineheart is correct about the drive shaft I see 2 on ebay side by side and one is longer the description says 250-sx/es driveshafts . I also read a post that said the difference was in the engine gearing but Don't know about the reliability of the source.
If i call a honda shop they won't help me i'll bet. How can this be cleared up. I NEED to know whats the difference besides the driveshaft Heck I"ll cut and shorten the Drive tube.

If you look in the manuals of both the rear end gears are listed differently however if you use a tire calculator the axle ration comes out so close to equal its not even funny when you factor in a 25inch tire verse a 22inch. 3wheelr.org has a scan of the sx manual.

here is were someon provided me the info for the red.

it may be bad info but all makes sense to me.
