went to put a new clutch in my 85r and when i got to the basket i noticed it was extremly grooved, when i posted about the clutch problems i was having a few of you told me that the basket was grooved and to it file down ,i was just wandering how far i could go?the basket is grooved mainly where the last 3 plates are.i would say the grooves are about 1/16 to a 1/8 inch deep,is it ok to file that far?so is this basket junk or can i save it for another year?also the kick starter has play in it,if you push it in it will move and has about a 1/8 inch of play side 2 side and up and down, what do i do about that, bearings or shims?

you should be able to file it down some probly not an 1/8 inch but enough to make it last awhile longer.

I say file the grooves flat and smooth. Just rember to start saving for a basket cause youll need it next time more then likely.
I'm not sure on the kicker I never had to work on mine.

The more you file, the wider the gap, and the more slop for the tabs to move back and forth. If its not been filed before, Id say go ahead and file it out, but be aware that it proabbly wont last all that long. My 86 R ate stock baskets like cray. The smartest thing I vere did was buy one of the billted ones. I got one for Janssenracing.com . It was quite a bit less than the Hinsen, and other expensive ones, and workd great. It was nice to have a clutch actually let go and disengage completely whenever I pulled it! No more stalling while going down steep hills at night and losing my headlight, and no more stalling whenever I locked up the rear wheel going into a turn. No my frying clutch disks because they wont disengage, and no more having to change oil after each couple hour ride! My janssenracing paid for itself in a very short period of time.
