I have been throwing the idea of a 500cc 2 stroke trike around lately and I was going to put a 500cc into a 200x (kx or Cr)but it will take to much modifaction and I dont think the frame/swingarm could take it.so now I want either a 86 tecate(maybe a 84/85) or a 85/86 250R to put a 500cc 2 stroke engine in too.I know there has been some members on here that have down this before and I would like some input on which trike you think is better for the engine and which one has better suspension and what knot...thanks! :beer

well..that sounds prety bad ass..if you get a kx 500 engine id put it in a tecate frame..if you get the cr put it in the honda frame..it shouldnt take to much mods if they are in the same brand frame i would think..whatever your doin i hope it looks as bad as it will be!

since u can pick up tecates for pretty cheap i would go tecate and since the kx500 is the highest performer in twostroke cc's per horse i would go with that. u do a tecate thats somehting i have never seen atc500Rs are rent as rare as u would think

yea...I am leaning towards the tecate...I wonder which year is easier to swap the kx 500 engine into?I would really like to get one in a 86 t-3!!!

I say the 86 Tecate with the CR or KX motor. CR motors are fairly easy to come by from what I'm seeing. It would be easier to bolt in a late model KX motor in a Tecate, even a 250 is goin to make great power. The KX500 has been done in a 86/87 Tecate before and its a really fairly easy swap, just like the CR in the ATC250R.
Why don't you work with what you have, a 200X. Find a CR, YZ, KX, or RM motor and stuff it in there. A 200cc two stroke KTM would be the dogs bollucks but cash may be hard to come by for that powerplant.
The early Tecate isn't a good choice for a swap.

what is the suspension like on the 84/85 t-3's compared to the 86?The only fully suspensed trike I have rode is my 200x and a 250sx...I dont know how it would compare to a t-3?Probley a lot better?

I would imagine its alot better as the Tecate was a race ready machine with long travel suspension and lots of adjustablility. I've had no chance to ride the 86/87 but the 86 had larger diameter forks.

Its great but I have Progressive springs and a Raptor shock so the ride is great. Haven't gotten to jump it yet but I'm sure it'll take some big air for my 120pound weight to bottom the suspension.

Is the raptor shock a bolt on upgrade?

For a KX500 to work in a Tecate you will need a 2nd Gen T3 (86-87). The 86 and 87 Tecate as well as the 85-current KX500 all have a center exiting exhaust requiring a split or "Y" frame down tube. The 84-85 Tecate has a side or angle exiting exhaust and the frame downtube is straight without any provision for a center exiting exhaust.

You said it best Curtis, the downtube on the early Tecate would have to be modified with an opening to fit the pipe.
The Raptor shock bolts on with some spacers on the bottom mount and bushings on the top mount to make the larger bolt hole in the Raptor shock fit the smaller stock bolt. Make sure to get the 01 model as it has a remote resivor that makes mounting it possible. I have my resivor mounted on top of the inside of my airbox. Its a smooth riding shock.
