I've heard of an ATC70 with a manual clutch but I was wanting to see if this will work. Just take a motor from a trail 70 and bolt a ATC70 recoil to it. Anything more complicated than that and we probably wont mess with it. I see the housing around the flywheel is different so I know we will have to swap that. I just dont want to have to get into the transmission or anything like that.

Not sure about the starter recoil fitting/working? One thing to think about is what are you going to do about brakes? The clutch cable/lever is going to take place of the brake cable/lever. A friend has a 110 (stroked to 133) clutch motor in his suspension framed 70. That was not a problem because the suspension frame comes with a foot brake/lever. So to do the conversion you want it looks like one mod you need to do is a foot brake.

I figure we could also just attach the brake lever to the right side of the handle bar or just add a foot lever. It would be kinda weird to have the rear brakes mounted up where you would normally have a front brake.

EXACTLY!!

Although they do come in handy on a X or R.
All the others can be slowed down good enough with the gears.

I have 3 trail 70's, all manual clutch. One runs and I'm totally sure it has a manual clutch. The others are for parts and very incoplete but the are all 3 a manual clutch.

The one I have that runs is a 1971. I think the other 2 are a 1969 and a 1970 I don't know for sure, I could look. I didn't know they made an auto clutch trail 70 until like 6 months ago. That's weird that all mine are manual clutch. You can't kick start it with the clutch pulled in even if you are in neutral. The clutch has to be engaged for the kick starter to turn the motor over.
