been having this trouble for a little while, really makes hill climbs difficult,...
my 85 200x does not shift well down into 1st gear. if I am in neutral I can
get it in by tapping on the lever (sometimes rocking) and eventually it will engage, if I am riding
in 2nd gear and go to downshift it wont go into 1st.(it leaves me in neutral
at some very bad momets.. ie steep climbs)
all other gears shift up and down fine & it will shift UP from 1st to 2nd fine,
Has anyone out there dealt with something like this before??

i had the same problem with my 85 200x that i had, I dont rememeber whatthe part was called that was bad in the tranny but ill try to explain it as best as i can, ok when you take the right side tranny case off(the side with the kick start) you will se the oil filter and to the left of it there will be a start looking "gaget" covered up allittle bit by a peice of metal and if you look closely the ends of the points are most likely rounded off and that your problem at least in my case it was.

is it sort of like a pinion gear for a carb maybe?..o yea and hotroddal..are u talking about that triangled piece with the bearings under it??if so i know what your talking about and on my 185 that thing would keep it from shifting into any gear

I have seen shifting problems with these motors before usually caused from riding without using the clutch or the gearshift cam is loose (star shaped thing). To fix, tighten the gearshift cam if its loose and try again but more than likely you will need the following parts:
Gearshift plate (bottle opener like thing) P/N 24621-446-650 and a gearshift cam (start shape thing) P/N 24411-446-650. You may also want to get a "stopper" which is the little wheel on the little arm that runs on the gearshift cam P/N 24430-437-000.
