how do i figure out the year of my bike??

i'll spare yall the newbie bullshat, and get to the point. I have a 7- honda 70 3 wheeler. i took it apart about a year ago to restore it, but havent had time to start until now. i do auto paint/body restorations for a living so this thing is going to be immaculate. its going to be assembly line fresh. i misplaced the black/gold sticker that shows year, etc. how do i figure out the year??? where should i order plastics from?? is there anything that i can do to the motor that will up the performance without changing outside appearence? where can i find a manual that shows exactly how it came from the factory (colors, etc)??? i'm painting the frame tomorrow with Dupont Chromabase black basecoat and clearcoat. the engine runs but i would like to rebuild it. best place for kit??? best place to get bearings?? thanks for any help. i'll post pics as soon as i start

what about putting an engine from a bigger bike in it, are the outside specs the same for any of the other motors/trannies and the 70?

Should be a motor ID number that can help ID a year... carb number too maybe. The vin number itself, might be stamped into the frame. That too should be able to give you a year. I know how to decipher a 80+ ATC, but not sure about how they did the 70's ATC's....

an atc90-125M motor will fit in there too with some "adjustments" ;)

yeah, i talked to a buddy that is into the 250r/350x and he said others stuff will fit, but nothing is the same size on the outside. i want it to look like it just was unwrapped at the dealer. the only reason i am going to do anything to the motor is so it will actually move me around when i want to show it off. its either a 78 or a 79

ok, new plan. buddy said to just put a dirtbike piston in it. he has the same done to his and it moves him around enough. prob ordering everything from servicehonda.com i'll post pics when i get the rest painted, prob next week.

If you are wanting to know then year for the purposes of ordering parts, especially motor parts, youll find the year doesnt make much difference for most of them. Honda used basically the same motors on ATC70, TRX70, CT70 aka Trail 70, SL70, and XL70. The motors were pretty much interchangeable with some model specific variations such as manual and auto clutch, pull start, kickstart, 3 speed and 4 speed, and lighting coil. Ive seen a manual clutch ATC70 with a headlight before using an SL70 motor. I think all years of all these models used the same top end.

Ive never found any chart anywhere on the web for translation 70's vin numbers, and it wasnt for lack of trying, but Ill bet a phone call to your dealer with the vin #'s handy would solve that question.
