I currently own an '84 200 ES(Big Red), and I love this trike to death...but I could sure use some more power  while on the muddy trails I regularly ride on. More power's my big issue, because I mainly ride with quads of the 400cc class, and I need to prove just how much better 3 wheels are compared to 4 :o ...speed's also an issue, the utility trike I have obivously doesnt have much of it. My question: If I were to get an '85 or so 250x would this suit both of my needs(utility power & speed), or would it just cater to the speed aspect?
SUMMARY: Looking for a fast workhouse capable of efficiently getting through tight mud spots and showing up those golf cart things, speed wise.

Hmmm the 250sx would be a good bike for you, it sounds like, but also check out the Yamaha 225DX as well. Both are great trikes and about equally matched. My personal preference is the Yamaha.

Do whatever you can to find a 250sx. They are powerful, bulletproof, and pretty fast (55mph or so) You can put a rack on the back and the first gear is low for pulling.

you want a 250sx, 200x is a great trail trike, but isn't meant to do work.

So the SX is a cross between utility and speed?..in the pics I see, it has little tires...a lot of space from fender to tire..does this affect stability much?...and also, how many ponies does the SX push out?

I've owned both a 86 250es and now I have a 250sx, I like the 250sx more then I did the ES all though thay are very simaler, thay both use the same motor, 246cc 5 speed with reverse, thay both use the same shaft drive(im 90% sure) and In my case thay both do about the same speed toped out(about 50) however the SX has 22x11 tires and the ES has 25x12's, I like the smaller tires on the SX more because thay give more room in the fender well and there also cheaper sice there a smaller tire(the guy I bought mine from said it only cost $25 a peice for the brand new cheng shin whooly boggers on mine, and thay go anywhere!) so I'd say the SX is the better choice(or 250R) for what your looking for.

If your looking for a utility trike that will run faster than the 400s out there today you just won't find it. Sounds like you need to make the jump to 2-stroke racers like the 250R, Tri-Z or a T3.
For the record there was no 250X 3 wheeler.
