I love my totally stock 86 250r (the only aftermarket items are the rear tires and a K&N filter) but, let's face it, I can always use more power. I was thinking the CT 310 kit, but was told the ESR powervalve was the way to go. They have a 265, 310, 330, 350, and 370. But the 330 on up require a long rod. I want to keep the bottom end as stock as possible so long rod is out of the question. Anyone have comments about the powervalve top ends vs. the CT kit? 265 vs. 310? I ride mostly dunes and desert; It's the only good thing about living in California :welcome: I'm just looking for the fastest, most reliable set up. And it should be free on my birthday! :w00t:

I don't have any experience with the power valve cylinders from ESR or CT, but I do have a non-power valve ESR 310 kit on my R and love it. A friend has the same 310 kit from CT and I smoke him all day long in the dunes and on the hill. Both cylinders are made by Pro-X, but ESR and CT have different porting set ups. Where in CA are you located and where do you usually ride?

Porting will be the easiest and least expensive, but to have it done right plan on spending $150 minimum plus the cost of other mods such as reeds, pipe, carb, etc. You can also bore a stock 85 or 86 R cylinder to 69mm for a pretty wild 270cc sleeper motor, but if you take it that far you won't have any overbores left.

I believe non-PV big bore kits start at about $800 for a water pumper.

I was wondering about the ESR and CT comparison. That settles it, I going with an ESR 310 powervalve kit. Especially since I already have an ESR reedcage and pipe. Badpig, I highly recomend the ATC 5 pipe and The RB2000 reedcage. Get a 38mm or larger carb also. You are going to love it!

I forgot about the ESR silencer, I think it is the ATC M or something. It is hard to slip on the pipe though. But way worth it, and it sounds awesome.

I have the pipe/silencer, I found its a bit tough to get on right, I had to cut some spacers and such and when I switched to the 86 frame, I had to put exhaust hangers to move the silencer in about 1/2. Another expeirence of mine is that it didn't fit on the bike with the skid plate one, when I switched to the spacer plate motor , I could use the skid plate. It really didn't bother me much as I don't have any skids on my trike(strictly mx). I had a esr330, and I wanna buy a 265 pv. And also I use a 38 a/s carb and a cr 250 igintion.

Whats wrong with FMF pipe just bolt it on and go faster?

The skid plate does not fit with esr's pipe, now that I remember I had to space my silencer out almost a quarter inch to clear the shock even though I probably did not have to, just felt better doing it. I'm going to cut out a small section of my skid plate so I can put it back on. It was hell getting the silencer to slip on the pipe, it was like the silencer was to small in diameter for the pipe. All in all, I am very satisfied.

I had to trim my skid plate to fit the ESR pipe on my 85. Other than that (not that, that was anything) the fit, quality and performance gains were excellent, very happy with it.

Are you going with us to pismo in jan? ESR is the way to go, ESR products all the way. Eddie knows his S***. Some of my friends dads raced for him in the 80's, and there still getting special work done from him.

What dates in Jan? I'm working weekends right now, but I will be switching to weekdays in the middle of Jan, so I will have weekends off for the next six months :beer .

How does the ESR pipe act? Is it smooth, or does it hit real hard in the middle?

The ESR website address is www.esr250.com (http://www.esr250.com), but it's not working for me right now. Try picking up a dirtwheels mag, they always have a big ad in there.

blown331 where did you have to trim the skidplate, in the top or on the side?

You can go so much faster without punching the cyl out if your stock . I would start with a pipe. You will not want to use stock pipe if you end up with a 300 kit later . My bike is 1st over and im running my close to stock head and it scares the hell out of people who ride it .Just bolt on crap and porting.

Have you ever heard anything about the 389cc polanda? using a polaris 400 topend on a 250r. I'll find the thread on my local board and post it. seems like it produced 60hp. Here's a shop that deal with them. http://www.mpracing.biz/

both company's have good performance, but if you want better quality, definetly go with anything from CT, i have seen cylynders from both company's and they both look good, but the big bore ESR stuff has a cheesy looking spacer, and some finishing touches arent quite as nice as the CT stuff. Also, CT has proven itself more than ESR with tons of titles and championships, and has a great track record for being very reliable.

I'm getting a lrd 310pv. It should be here in a few days. When it stops snowing here I'll let you know how it is. By the way, lrd used to make a killer pipe for 250r's and they have the molds, so give a call and maybe with enough pnone calls they will a few of them, also the same for a tri-z
