I recently purchased a 1986 atc 250r in very good condition, howerver it leaks some gas from the carb overflow line even when the petcock is turned to the off position. Im just about positive that its the petcock(what else is there?). I was wondering if this common among other 250r owners. Also i was wondering if anyone out there has a non leaking petcock, and perhaps a tank to go with it. One with no fading or oxidation of course- thanks

Sounds like 2 problems.
1) Carb "float-bowl" shutoff valve is not engageing all the way. Most likely gumed up & needs cleaned or replaced. Get a manual to see how, not as hard as it looks or seems.
2) Petcock gasket inside the thing itself is done. Get a new one from your local atv shop. I couldn't find the stock part number one, but its a really standard Honda part. I used one the Honda dealer said was for some totaly other bike. Take your petcock apart and take out the gasket, even if its in peices like mine was, & take it with ya for reference.

My needle valve and seat were dirty on my 350x and it did that. Cleaned them and it cured the problem.

Make Sure You Dont Go Past "off" And Swithch To "res" Which Means Reserve. That Where It Should Be If It Has Sat Forever And It Needs Lotsa Gas To The Engine. I Had The Same Thing Happen...i Went Past Off And To Res.......really Sucked When Ypu Got Vp In It!!!

Even if gas is on for a year , it should not leak fuel if the floats Or NEEDLE AND SEAT are clean and working .

i think its the o ring holding the float bowl to the top of the carb. use some silcone and DONT use super glue! had a freind do that and wrecked his bike

A new petcock internal gasket is $9 at the dealers and $5 at Servide Honda. Ask for the 86/87 Trx petcock gasket. Its identical.
I'd get 2 or 3.
