Hey folks.

I just picked up an '85 250SX a few hours ago.
I'm going over it thoroughly before riding (fluid levels and such).

What is the rule of thumb for the fluid level in an '85 250SX rear axle?
Up to the bottom of the fill hole?

What fluid to use?

Thanks for the help.

I ASSUMED that was the fluid but you know what happens when you assume.

How about the level?
Is there a level indicator possibly cast into the housing?

Thanks again!

Just put you some 80 or 90 weight gear oil in there. Fill it up until it runs out the hole. Thats what the service manual says. It doesnt take much, so be sure that its full. I lift the left rear tire off the ground a couple of inches to do mine. :beer

Yep, I use 90w gear oil, I have always wondered if you would do any damage by overfilling the rear end. It just seems to make you feel better by lifting the left tire and filling.

I have taken the rearend apart on these. There isnt much to them. Just bearings and gears. Last time I checked they both liked plenty of oil. :D Overfilling them doesnt do a thing. At the worst it will work its way out of the pinion nut area. Then it will just coat the insides where the shaft runs. No big deal. I overfill mine and have never had any trouble. The 3 ounces or so that it calls for just doesnt seem like enough. Thats why a tilt it. :beer
