with a four stroke you options are limited but you might try a larger carb and bigger valves also don't forget the weight reduction program. rip off all the stuff you don't need like lights and starters go with aluminum parts

Also add to that list a 350x carb. There was a thread recently about putting a 350x carb in a sx and it sounds like all you have to do is change the jets. I'd also go with the biggest tires possible for clearance in the mud.

The 350x will sling anything you put it in by the way. Ex. Mud, Snow, Sand, ect.

I was gonna do some modifying on the big red 250 es I just got, as I understand they are the same motor. I have the 10.5 to 1 piston from powroll sitting on my desk now. But the guy fixing the motor that was locked said I shouldnt mess with it cause everything in the engine was like brand new, piston, rings, bore. A spring had broke on the shiftlever from a wreck that forced it too far down and it made its way to the crankshaft and wedged between it and the rod.

any way. on his advice, I have decided against internal engine modifications to keep stock reliability.

I have decided on this instead, and maybe some good free flowing exhaust. If you are a little bit mechanically savy, read this page a couple of times, and go for it. its cheap, with a little shopping, and you can add as much power as you want till you blow the head off.
