Well, after snapping my recoil cord twice within the last two months, I am looking to an alternative to the stocker on my 200s.

What else is out there? I read in the repair manuel that a cable was once available. I know no details of the "cable" mentioned.

Should I upgrade or just pick up a new rope? Also, I do see a dome piston in the future.

Get a good nylon rope with High Tenstile strength. I get mine at our TSC for under $5 and never have had to replace a rope more than once in 2 years.
Good Rope = Good dependability
Cheap Rope = Not much Dependability
Cable = More wear on your pullstarter.

I'd also be weary of a cable if/when the engine decided to pop back on compression stroke. Normally, this is when a rope simply breaks. But if your using cable and you got a sunday holt onto that handle, its gonna jerk it right out of your hand and probably hurt you in the process.

That's my favorite thing! When your hand is already tired and your fingers cold... then SURPRISE!

This is a good point HondaATC.

Thanks guys,

My hands were cold and wet and the rope pulled out of my hand 3 times in a row. By that time my hand hurt so bad I had someone else start it. The next morning it still hurt so I went to the hospital and my finger was both broken and dislocated plus a peice of bone was totally seperated into 2 peices. They had to call in a hand doctor and insert 2 steel pins through the top of my finger that went through the first knuckle. They pulled the pins after about 6 weeks and it's good to go now. Crazy huh? I still have the x-rays while broken and with pins and I kept the pins. They are about 2 inches long.

They are about 2 inches long.

Dude, that poked out on both sides! Only kidding.

Wow... never knew all of that could happen. I'll have to be more careful. Very interested story. Is it completely better now?

We put a homemade cable on a 185 with the high comp piston. It cut about a 2 inch groove in the recoil case.(didnt have that rubber guide). We finally just got a used assembly with a rubber deal so the rope wouldnt be cut and the rope works fine.

The pins are over half the length of my finger and went right in through the top, they did it while I was away and that didn't feel so good.

The only thing I can still notice is if I hit the spot of my finger where the pins went in, it's more sensitive, thats it. It took about 2 months before I could bend my finger again.

I'd investigave why the cable is breaking so often in the first place.. check for sharp spots in the housing and sand them down if possible.

lol i just have pull start on my 82' 200, for a wile i had the decomp canble disconected, man the first time i pulled on that without the decomp i almost riped my arm off, the thing has like very low miles and great comp still lol with the decomp lever i can start it warm with 1 hand but when its cold out now i have to yank on it for like 5 10 mins befor it starts fireing cuse the oil is cold and i have to keep it outside :( i think im gona try and get one of them magnet block heaters that you can buy at crappy tire and stick it on the bottem of the motor overnight....to see if that helps :)

Oh man I pulled my arm of yesterday, I went away for a month toot he very top of NY for the hunting season and she sat at my friends barn, I knew she would be angry with me.

Wasn't bad at all, ten pulls, took off my jacket, five more pulls and alotta cuss words, 5 more pulls and shes running.

Yesterday, she would fire and stop fire and stop fire and stop, so like dumb red necks that we are, my friend starts pulling me around with his truck 3 laps up and down the road and some back firing and shes running great again, picky lil' wench doens't like that cold.

Mine used too break occasionaly, even with a good rope, so i started putting an extra 6-8 inches of rope on, and that took care of it.

Good point, On my brothers old Honda 110 the pulley had worn which made it sharp enough to cut the rope every month or so. Be sure to inspect it carefully.

Denniskirk sell a metal pull cable. On my last 200s I decided to try it out, I hated it enough to pull it right back out and put back in the rope. The problems I had was that it is not as flexible as a rope so it was very had to install and wind up. When I finally got it installed it would act like a spring making it even harder to pull and then it didn’t like trying to go back in.
