What's up fellow wheelers, I have been restoring an 86 ATC250R in the last two years and have enjoyed every minute of it. It is pretty much completed and I am very happy of the outcome. I would like some opinions on who does the best cylinder work (porting). I am looking for more power all around especially on top. My crank fell apart three months ago and have since rebuilt the engine completely from bottom to top. I also added bunch of goodies like a LSR 4" wider rear axle, ESR ATC 5 pipe and billet exhaust flange, ESR silencer, ESR RB2000 reed block, new 38 mm Mikuni TMX with carb adapter ring attached to the stock airbox without the lid. The engine was completly stock before except for a Uni filter. I have been riding my ATC with the new parts for the last month and love it. The ESR pipe and reed block is worth every penny, my trike is more responsive, has way more bottom and mid power, and was shocked when I got into the topend of the powerband, it actully reved out and didn't fall flat on its face. It has a decent pull on top now! I guess that was 38 mm's does for you. Well, that is where I am now, I want to know what a ported and polished cylinder will do? I want more power all around with mainly more on top. Who's the best at porting? I am also going to put Power Nows on the front and back of the carb to further increase responsiveness and power on the lower end. I have been using PN's on my CR250R's with great results. Another question I have is or were there aluminum swingarms made for the 250R? Well, I love this forum and reading everybodies questions and answers. I have learned a tremendous amount of information and for that I am truly grateful. I am also stoked on Old Fart's thread. What a life he has led! And KASEY's all mighty ATC500R! That is power!

:beer Welcome to the site :beer Since you have already dealt with ESR, I would recomment you call them for your porting needs. They will be able to match your exsisting pipe to your porting needs. I believe CALFAB was the only one to make an aluminum swingarm for the 85-86 but I may be wrong. Post a pic of your R.

I agree with x.system. Calfab is the only manufacturer that I ever heard of that produced an aluminum swingarm for the 85-86 250R's. If you can find one somewhere (pretty rare), they are a nice way to lighten up your bike, but If you like to do any jumping, I would recommend a steel/chromoly swingarm instead. An aluminum Calfab swingarm won't last that long under that kind of stress. I have no personal experience with the Calfab units, I'm just relaying what I've read about them. I have however cracked my fair share of stock swingarms.

Thanks x.system and Red Rider. I am thinking about buying an Esr 265pv or 310pv cylinder. I do not know which, I mainly run cross country and mx. In the meantime, I thought I would port my stock cylinder since it is cost effective. What opinions does everybody have between the revability of the 265pv to a torqier 310pv. Will a 310pv still rev out? Red Rider, I too love the red scheme of the 88 and 89 CR's. That was the best scheme. I miss my 89 CR 250R. Your ATC's 88 red TRX scheme is awesome! Also, is the 89 TRX 250R that same red as the 88?

The 89 trx is all white plastic with a red seat.

I have heard a lot of good stuff about ESR. If anything were to happen to my pipe, I would definately by one of their pipes just from information posted on this site.
With that being said, I had K&T Performance out here in Utah do my porting. I met Kim and his sons this last summer through a friend of mine who has a Banshee. They can make a banshee run like crazy. So I started talking to them about my 250R and it sound like they could do something for me. The best part is they are only about 45 minutes away form My house. Anyway I was due for a bore and a new piston so we went .40 over, ported it, I had them bore a 38 Mikuni TM to 39.5, and install a power jet. I bought a Boysen Rad Valve. I run an air boot from a TRX with a TRX K&N fitler. I have a custom made cone pipe. The thing halls ***. I am very impressed with it. Needless to say I am very impressed with K&T and would rrecommend them to anyone. :beer

Out of a stock-displacement 250.

They're also alcohol wizards.
Don't forget alcohol.....if you want obsene Torque and HP, ask them about it.
Alcohol isn't voodoo anymore, it can be reliable and very safe.
MUCH cheaper than race fuel.

Apollo, It depends on your budget. You can simply send your cylinder off to any known engine shop and get a respectable product. Most reputable shops should do a decent job. If you have an ESR pipe already it would only make sense to let Eddie Sanders do the job. However the "Proper" way to have it done would involve sending your entire motor so that the port timing is done exactly right for your engine. The big name tuners like Loren Duncan, Curtis Sparks and others have specialized on this same basic 250R motor for more than a decade.

Curtis.

Thanks everybody for responding, now I need to figure out what to do. Those are cool web sites also. I'm surprised I have never heard of FTZ.
Well, would you rather have a 265pv, 310pv, or bigger? I am starting to lean to a 265pv because I like my bikes to have quick response and to rev out. Is a 310pv or 330pv too big? Or could you port them to rev out and have a strong pull on top with decent bottom? Would I lose response? I do not want a LT500R type waiting period. I am not into top speed, just acceleration, a 1/8 mile style situation. I want to stay with 93 octane gas.

the descripton of the use you will be lookin for the bike, i would go for a 265pv, i hear the 330 is more slugish like a LT500/....

265PV is wat most trx's racing use, that or the 310s the 330 is just to big of a bore not to stroke and most dont stroke them. also if u dont want to spend the big bucks for the PV go to trinitiy and have them turbo port the engine. You say wats a turbo port ITS NUTS! they take trailprotrailpro crank and inscribe all these little fins and wat happens is at high rpms it creats more suction and also pressurizes the cyclinder and creates a weird turbo feel at high rpms. i would say go with trinity that place has the fastest banshee in the drags right now, and the fasts pikes peak quad. they have lots of trx/atc stuff there they also will build u a pipe for trailprotrailpro R for 300 bucks hand built and that can be chromed also. They also make full drag pipes out of frame with silencers for 300 bucks, they port very well and make more power for the buck i think
hope u get trailprotrailpro R flyin

My brother had an '88 TRX250R a few years ago.
He bought and installed the CT Racing 310 Power Package.
This package included the Pro-X cylinder with CT's porting, a 39mm PWK carb., CT pipe and silencer, reed cage and some other parts...
Overall?
A VERY easy installation.
Torque like no 250 can produce.
A violent top end charge.
VERY reliable and "inexpensive" considering how complete the package was and how painless the installation went.

The bad? It was a mutha to kick start!!

This is just another option, folks.
And me pulling from my memory banks.

Not saying the PV's are bad....THEY'RE not, I think they're awesome.
