A lot of people are wantin to put them on the 350X.

So I guess it flows alot better that a stock 350X exhaust? If the 450 silencer fits a 350X i'd suggest an aftermarket 450R slip on. I picked up MAJOR power by ditching the stock exhaust but I guess the 350X doesn't need to breath as much as a 450 so it might now be all that restrictive on a 350X???
Very interesting though.

you have to modify the 450r exhaust for it to fit right

The 450R exhaust with at HRC tip flows much better than the stock 350X exhaust. Much Better. And its cheap to aquire and mount up. Beats the hell out of $200+ for a performance aftermarket exhaust. And its nice Honda quality and polished stainless. Well worth the money. I had to make a hole in the frame near the grabbar mounts and have a muffler shop make me a MID pipe and weld it on to the muffler ( $15 ). Other than that its a breeze.

Here's the post I made back in August about the install of the 450R:
http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showpost.php?p=147730&postcount=1
It's under the "Tech Tips" section, too.
ClayW summed it up real well.
A 450R muffler flows WAY more than even a modded 350X engine will need.
A stock 450R is, according to the 'net  , around 33HP so our "little" 27HP has room to grow.
Sorry but I have to add this little "Jab" to the TRX450R AND YFZ450 crowd: Isn't an '86 ATC250R 38HP? Hmmmmmm...... :D
Okay, I feel better now. :)
Got a healthy 350X? Put the HRC tip on and you're good to go.
You can't beat Honda factory quality, stainless steel, THE PRICE and they're all only slightly used since people immediately throw stupid money at big $$ exhausts for their 450R's.
Who better than us to cash in on their sillyness!! :)

A stock 450R dyno's about 40 horse at the wheels, probably 45 or better at the motor. My stock ATC250R is not even close to as fast as my stock 450R. Not even close. I'm working on that little problem right now though.

First and foremost:
I am NOT trying to start an argument here but....
40HP at the wheels? That's AWFULLY ambitious.
Here's a link to a reputable article about the 450R, including stock HP:
http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/Article_Page.aspx?ArticleID=890&Page=3
"33Hp@7500rpm in stock form, 3 down on the YFZ450.....".
Take it for what it's worth.
Who do you believe?
My brothers 450R is STOUT but not 40+HP stout.
I'm not saying a 250R would smoke a 450R.
But the 450R isn't going to "clean an R's clock" by any means....unless the R is tired or rider skill comes into the picture (skill alone makes all the difference in the world).
Power-to-weight ratios:
Providing the above article is true:
450R=33HP/350 lbs.
250R=38HP/291 lbs.
.....Hmmm.....
Food for thought:
With the money spent on a TRX450R, you could outfit a water-cooled R with enough firepower to annihilate a 450R AND have money left over to buy a used pick-up truck to haul you, your supplies and the R to your favorite riding place! :D

Sorry about that big post but my mind just started "flowing" and I had to go with it. :)
My 350X is no competition for that 450R.
To be expected, though.
My X is "quick" but it's no rocket.
That's what makes it a fantastic trike.....GREAT in the woods and still plenty of "umph" to haul my butt around AND have fun with.

Yeah, I have wondered lately if if would be worth getting a 450R. The only prob would be that I would have to sell the 350X and BigRed to get it. :( Dont know if if would be worth it. The 350X is the fastest trike that I have ridden, but my arse has grown a bit, and with that, the biggest performance mod I could do to it would be to go on a diet and loose about 50 lbs. :D :beer

Get a new Yamaha YFZ450.
They're just plain stupid fun and violent is the only word for their powerplants.
Amazing......simply amazing.
AND they're electric start to boot!
For me? There'd be no choice BUT the YFZ.
Yes, I'm a Honda man but the bang-for-the-buck is hard to beat with the YFZ.
How about just hunting down a good '86 ATC250R if you want more power and speed on a budget?
I did. :)
I'm dying to take it for a ride, too.
Come on Sunday!!! :w00t:

I'm telling you a 250R is no competion what so ever for a 450R. My buddy has a YFZ also. We have the same mods except I have the HRC cam and they are about even. MO350X you're right across the river come see for yourself. The guy with the YFZ lives in Kirkwood. I'm about 20 minutes from JB bride but in IL. My other buddy as a TRX250R (he actually keeps it at my house) It as 13 to 1 compression, ESR pipe, cool head and a 38mm air stryker and it's 450R all the way. The yosh full system really woke the 450 up, it's insane and I've got my eye set on a 12 to 1 500cc piston. I have a 450R and an ATC250R. My buddy has a 250R and 450R also, they are all 4 at my house right now. You can ask him, the 450R's are bad to the bone. We have alot of area to ride, we can ride all day so it will be worth your time.
Not to say the 450R can't be beat, because I want it to get beat, it just hasn't happend yet. I think my ATC250R is getting a power valve motor, that should do it. I want the 3 wheeler faster than the 4 wheeler. But once that piston is in the 450 with a worked head I have a feeling the results will change again.
MO350X we are most likely riding this Sunday, seriously come out so you can post some results of the 450R in action.

Sunday is St. Joe, as of right now.
Let's try to coordinate another day.
Is it your property?
I'd love to come see all those bad *** bikes!!
I hear what you're saying, loud and clear.
AND....it sounds like your interests parallel mine and my brother's (BIG 450R and 250R power).
My brother just did the whole HRC kit deal and has yet to ride it but around his subdivision.
I'll check with my bro and see what day(s) he's available.
Would you mind PM-ing me your phone number?
Even if we all didn't ride, we could bench race and talk trike and quad! :w00t:
Thanks!

Blown's got a good source on this one, the 450's are making about 40hp. Your right on with saying the atc250r should be around 38hp but 27hp on the 350x is too high. That's a honda crank value, the real number is about 22hp.

Oops, I didn't specify.
Yes, 38 and 27 are both crankshaft numbers I've pulled from the 'net.
I've seen at least a half dozen different HP figures for the 450R.
Both crankshaft and rear wheel.
To add more confusion to the mix: different dyno's give different figures both in design AND in their conversion factors AND the numbers are easily swayed in favor of big sales (performance parts).
We'll just go with 40, then.

The 38 is the rear wheel that I've seen from 2 different sources. So to clairifly rear wheel hp:
85/86 ATC 250R = 38-39hp stock
85/86 ATC 350X = 22-23hp stock
450's = 39-40hp stock

That sounds right on to me. I think the reason my 450 is so much faster than my 250 even though it looks like the 250 might have the power to weight ratio advantage is the 450 is rediculously choked from the factory. I mean it has to **** air through like a one inch diameter opening. It's making 40 rwhp with a 118 main jet! That should tell you right there it's choked bad. I have the HRC kit, which is a larger air snorkle, 185 min jet with new needle, open air box lid and a cam. Then I added the Yosh full system which made a huge difference. The ATC is stock with a ESR pipe, filter and jet kit.

My brother brought his 450R over to my house to test it on the road and store it.
It was pulling wheelies up to 4th gear!
He JUST installed the HRC kit and it sounds/runs psycho!!!
I'm serious.
He said it bounced off the rev-limiter so fast it was scary, compared to stock.
I thought it was leaning out on the top or something as he flew by.
Wow.
Can't wait to go to St. Joe with it and my trike on Sunday!!! :w00t:

Tell him to get a full exhaust system on it. Huge difference. I can hit the rev limiter in 5th gear, let off, hammer it and pull the front end up for miles. I'm not exagerating either. I'll show you when you come out. My buddy is about 10 times better than me at doing that too, it's great. We pass cars doen the high way while riding wheelies.
I'm gonna try to make it to St. Joes on Sunday too. If I can find ya I'll show ya some 5th gear wheelies.

He's married with child so coughing up the jack for an exhaust is out of the question.
He was lucky momma turned loose of the $250 to get the HRC kit!
Bought through a "friend of the family". ;)
I bet he'll be happy with the present improvements for a LONG time to come.
Man, you guys sound like wild riders.
We're probably like a bunch of old men compared to y'all. :p
If you get to St. Joe's, look for an '85 350X (or an '86 250R, haven't made up my mind yet), the red '04 450R and a red/white '04 Raptor.
There are two more 350X's scheduled to appear, too.
We SHOULD BE in a white '97 Ford Power Stroke 4WD standard cab long bed with a 2 axle trailer in tow.
Let's hope mother nature cooperates.
So far, so good!
