The auction says it doesn't run, but I talked to the guy this afternoon and he says he had it running but the tank is rusty and fills the carb with crud.
Any oppinions on the plastic clark gas tanks for these things?
Also. has anyone put an 86-87 front fender on their 83-85 200x? How do you like how it looks? I'm not too keen on how wide the 83-85 is, the 86-87 just looks more aggressive to me. Will it fit?
Also I contemplating the usualy mods. 6 speed tranny, X200 top end & carb. etc etc. But is there anything also anyone would suggest doing. I already know I need a complete set of new plastic. i'm gonna get a full set of maier.

Man, looks like you landed your self a pretty got project bike. Looks similar in condition to my 350X I just finished. Man its just my opinion, but fix your tank up. If it doesnt leak you can fix it. Take it off and take the water hose with a nozzel on the end of it and blast the rust loose on the inside. Hell, I even put rocks in mine and rattled them around. Then rinse it out real good. THen go to home depot and buy you some muratic acid. Filler up with it. Take the petcok off though. Plug that hole up, and pour it in there and let it eat. I would say 5 to 10 min tops. It will eat the crap out of all the rust on the inside. Then dump it out and rinse it out real good. I even throw baking soda in there to make sure that it neutralizes the acid. Then pour a little gas or rubbing alchol in there to get rid of the water. Then spray some WD-40 in there. Your tank should be good to go on the inside. Its pretty easy and fast.

a 85-86 250R front fender will bolt right up and they look awesome.

Alright. picked up the 200X today. Man was I ever surprised how littlethis trike seemed. I guess my 500 darwfs everything. Its gonna be different working on this one. Anywho...it was 4.5hr drive through mist and fog and rain and and crazy drivers...and i got lost in pittsburg but finally i made it.
Well when i got there i was kinda a little took back for a minute. as I said, this is my first encounter with a 200x and it just seeemd small to me but don't worry now that i've gotten it home and gotten to more clasley examine it/disassemble it, lol, my first impression was a little off.
Alright.. the poor thing is pretty rough and is definatly going to get some TLC.
First off the bat, the fenders and seat are trashed. Probably the good parts off of the fender set are the seat pan and the mounting brackets.
Next. The tank is TRASHED. This thing has a huge rust hole in the side of it. No cleaning this tank. I need to replace it and i think iI'm gonna stick with finding a metal tank. Not plastic.
Ok so the next glaring problem. The head light is not the right headlight. Someone took some walmart ltrailer light and stuck on the front of this X Oh my freaking Gawd. Who in there right mind would do this. So obviously I need the light bucket and bulb. The wiring and braket seem to be all there.
Next up..the front wheel is cherry altough it could use a tire. no biggie. BUt check out the rear wheels and tires.....they're different sizes, weird paddles at that, and the rims are some kinda wierd aftermarket wheel. ugg...I think i'm gonna keep my eye on ebay for a set of stock 400ex wheels & tires.
Ok so they're like the major things. So we move on.....
The exhaust has some light surface rust but no holes... very cool altough it's missing one mounting bolt. but still like I said...cool
the clutch and brake levers are bent and the clutch cable is MIA. Typical.
But a plus, both front and back brake systems hold fluid and work...but they do need new pads...
Moving on.....the engine turns over and seems to have good compression. i am hearing some kind of unidentified rattle....Maybe timming chain? The exhaust is loose so it maybe that. I'll check it out tomarrow. The engine is al lthere though and no broken cases so thats a plus. The kicker is kinda a little loose at the joint...tha kinda bugs me. Oh yeah...the airbox is there and in good shape but the snorkel tube, from the box to the carb is gone. blah. I bet thats goona be a pain to find.
Lastley. the frame is sound with no cracks, but there is some rust stating to form that concerns me. The frame is going to haveto be stripped and painted/powdercoated...(maybe gussetted. i haven't decided.) The swing arm will need to be stripped and painted also and al lthe bearings replaced. Oh yeah the rear shock looks a little saggy too. It maybe sent to works for a rebuild and beefier spring..i'm undecided at this point.
ultimatly as I said not too hateful. I figure it'll clock in just under a $1k after the rebuild and some performace mods.
Oh.. its came with an extended axel on it. Thats kinda cool.
i also think I'm gonna go with the stock color sceme. i still don't know.
The chain is shot too. I'll probalbly replace all the sprockets, slider, chain and chain adjusters (someone used ilet hooks to raplace the adjusters. geez!)
So a shoping list.
Definate
Gas tank & shrouds
front & rear fender (new maier)
seat foam and cover
headlight assembly

front & rear brake pads
chain, sprockets adjusters

That sounds like my project 200x that I have going.Do you know what brand of extended axel that you have or know who manufactured aftermarket 200x axels? Mine is about 39 inches or slightly more.I am unsure what brand it is but it is nice :D I have several extra 200x parts that you need.Parts that I need are tires and rear plastic.Ride on :naughty:

That is the 200x I was thinking about bidding on. Are you going to put this one on your website too? I am planning and gathering parts for a 200x project, right now I need to clear out the other projects first though. Why the 400ex rear wheels, is it just for looks?
Dammit!

I wouldn't bother with a 1983-1985 headlight. I never liked them. Not just because they're a bit on the ugly side but they stick out in such a way that in even a simple tip-over type crash, they're toast. I'd look into throwing a headlight from either a 1986 250r or 1986 200x on there. Maybe a 350x if they fit. The way those headlights mount is a lot better too (rubber straps around the tubes instead of a bracket).
My first wreck on my 200x when it was almost brand new nearly destroyed the headlight and it occurred in deep snow (if it had been dirt it would have been a goner). Managed to save it and promptly bought a headlight guard after that. The headlight guard did it's job on several occasions so that's another viable route you can go. Just be aware that, without protection, those stock headlights are fragile.
Anyway, I'm jealous. I drove by a 1985 200x on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it and got all nostalgic. I can't wait to have another one. Being able to afford a second trike is probably a year down the road for me though. :(
Dammit!

Might as well add my two cents on the engine mods.
High compression piston, cam, stiffer valve springs, K&N filter, pipe (supertrapp racing series if you can manage to find one) and a bigger carb.
The above will give you a very nice performance boost without sacrificing reliability or causing yourself a huge headache trying to get some crazy mod to work (200x's are "fun" machines, not migraine headache machines ;) ). The 200x engine is very capable without a whole lot of tinkering. If those mods don't give it enough power for you, you probably should have bought a 350x. :p
I'd be more concerned with the suspension personally. The mods I listed were what I did to my X (many, many moons ago) but I always felt the stock suspension needed beefing up. You can easily pull a taller gear with those mods too. I never really felt a need for a six speed tranny after I got my gearing setup optimally.

yeah. I got my X tore down some more to day. The rear suspension is totally disasembled. I'll probably get a page for the X up on my site tomarrow too. It depends. I work and have class tomarrow night and I need to study for a test on Tuesday. College definatly takes time away from the trikes. lol
I haven't decided if I'm going for restoration or a rider rebuild. So that will define what headlight I use.
I'll keep everyone posted.
