I am looking at purchasing a 250R, the 350X sold before i got to it, 400 bucks, and the rear caliper was shot, everything was still mint on it, grrrrrrr, day too late

Anyways, I want an opinion, on a fat or skinny front tire for a 250R

I will be strictly riding sand, so I want something to be able to get me around the corners pretty decent, and I also want something that will just float along the sand, not like my warrior that just sinks and spins

Anyways, I will be selling the warrior for a 250R once I find one, I would really like an old school air cooled and pimp it out with some phat pipes and some sweet tires (cant go paddles, only way to get to sand is to tear down the road a bit) So probaly Razrs or Razr 2's on the back with Razr's on the front

Any suggestons on fat or skinny front tire? what year did they go skinny? what would be the best air cooled 250R (year wise)

81-84 Aircooled R's had the fat front tire, they went skinny in 85-86(fastest models)I dont like fat front tires at al so I say skinny and since your going in the dunes then you will want a skinny front tire.(a fat tire will slow you down)

83-84 both run skinny tires on the front.

the 85-86 was liquid cooled right?

dang, i dont really want a liquid because I never had one except on a sled, and All i work on is air cooled, but if push comes to shove, then i might end up putting forks and tire from 85 or 86 on a air cooled frame, if it would work

Actually only the 81-82 R's had the fat front tire. 83-86 are skinny.

The fat tired Tecate would out corner the 84 R and was much faster overall. A Tecate would meet your needs perfectly and it is liquid cooled which will make more power than any aircooled R.

If I were to buy an air R it would be the old fat tired 81/82 because FAT TIRES ARE BEST for handling and they will float over the sand like you said. If you do buy one buy a ten inch front wheel and tire to put on to not only lighten the bike but to improve handling becuase of the lower profile of the tire.

The 81 through 84 are basicly the same motor and make the same power so its really a matter of personal preference. The 85/86 forks do fit on the 83/84 R, Blazerone did this to his 84 R(dunno if they fit the 81/82). The only way you can get a Razr for the front of your R is by having a skinny front tire and I've been told that the RAZR does not make a good front tire for a trike.

Just thinking about this post and I think a fat tired 200X would look very cool, put some 85 tecate forks on it or forks from an 81/82 R...it would handle great and the fat tire would make it a better woods bike by keeping the front out of ruts that a skinny tire would fall into. Just a thought.
