what do all the different letters on the 250s mean for example R, XR, X, ES??

I have just aquired a 85 bigred with 250es, I am guessing(electric start). In my barn I have a 1987 trx 250x fourwheeler, what are the actual differences in these engines? are parts interchangeable? would it be possible to put the 250x on the bigred and still have the reverse and driveshaft and if it were possible would there be a significant power increase? both are locked up right now and I want to rebuild one, but I have no use for the fourwheeler as its body is in real bad shape.

Well some people would say 250es would be "Electric start-Shaft drive". X would be for Sport. R would be for race, or racing. I don't know if those parts would interchange but they probaly don't seeing how the 250x is chain drive and the 250es is shaft. Maybe you could consult your honda dealer and see.

the R is a two stroke the rest are variations of the 250 four stroke.

I appreciate the help guys, the link that lots of nothing posted was very helpful for what the lettering stands for.

what are some of the actual differenceces in the 250es and 250 x as far as horsepower?? will some of the 250 x parts interchange with the es to give it more power like the carb, cam, piston, head etc.

This is a great site, thanks for the info.

I dont believe the parts will interchange since one is shaft and the other is chain.

the 250x has reverse. maybe hes talking bout a trx 250... oh well, almost nothing will interchange it its a 250x.. grips and handlebars.. a few nuts and bolts. the 2 bikes have very little in common except their names.

The three wheeler is a 1987 big red, the four wheelers tag reads 1987 trx 250x

the three wheeler is in prettygood shape other than being locked, is it worth rebuilding the motor or should i scrap it??

Rebuild it for sure if it's an 87. they are very rare.

why are the 87s rare??, will the parts from 85 and 86 models work??

the 87's are rare because this was the "official" last year ATC's were meant to be made and sold
