Hey all!
I have an intriguing setup on my 110 engine. As of right now have incredibly weak spark, and after a few pulls fades to nothing.....
My confusion, It has stock stator , CDI (I HOPE) and I can only assume, non stock wiring harness, on/off switch, a key in flat lookin black thing, that I can only guess came from an sx?? I went and bought me a nifty little multi-meter and with a lil luck I can figure out how to use it. Anyway, can anyone give me some numbers, to look for when (If) I hook this meter up. None of my manuals give numbers for multi meters (unless im lookin in wrong place), that I can semi reference. I hope this all made sense? Thx Jen
oh yeah before I forget, its not the stupid spark plug......

The 83 110 ignition is basically the same design as a 185-200. Knowing this and the most common problem with the 185-200 is the exciter coil I would start checking there. The black with red striped wire coming from the stator should check 215-240 ohms. The lower the number the weaker the spark.
I hope this helps.

i use the old type of multi meter ,,,, the one with the needle that flips fron one side to the other or somewhere in between.
i ain't for the life of me figured out those digital ones.
so was it the exciter coil ???

Are you all moved now? Someday, when I get my trikes fixed. I'd like to go riding, your family and mine. I have a wife two kids and three grandkids.

We are almost all moved in, Got a few things to unpack but almost liveable. Would love to go for a ride. I too have to go through every machine, looks like I need new jets in em all. My 250r shock is in the crapper. Hopefully get em all going strong by spring. Most are rideable, just got pick one and begin tearing it down. Its the if I dont fix it will be a real problem later things.....

Ok, back on topic,
My stator is checking out fine if I am doing this correctly. I went ahead and pulled it apart, there is rust and a a fine sanding is in order. But moving on......CDI?

Scratch that..... quick question, with flywheel off it checks out at about 150 ohms. Is the correct way to check this, and if so does this check as bad? Sorry silly questions, first time useing this meter..... Thx Jen

If it checked good while the flywheel is on, and only 150 with the flywheel removed then you might have a bad wire / connection. To check this the quickest: On the small coil of the stator test it from where the wire connects the the stator base plate. If your still only getting 150ohms then the exciter coil is bad and needs replaced. If it checks 210-240 then check the connections & wire for problems.
Note: If it actually is 150ohms you probably can get the machine started by spinning the motor over fast ( towed behind another machine ). But starting it by hand will be real hard. As I stated above:
The lower the number the weaker the spark.

I really believe I botched the first read. I took the meter to another 90 I have and it wasnt reading very well either. (hard to get it to ground). Anyway thx for the help it looks like im hunting for the coil. Ah but a good lesson..... Future reference where are you getting the ohms #'s from? I am having some trouble finding them in manuals. Thx Jen

In my Clymer's Manual ( for the 185-200 ) they have the information in Chapter 7 on page 211. I don't have a manual for the 110 here at home to heck. If I can remember I will bring a 110 manual home.

P.S. I have a stash of new coils at the shop. Stop on in sometime. lol
