I'm working on the 83 R. Once it warms up it has a real hard time getting rolling. Like it's extremely rich on the idle circuit. I'm running the idle mixture screw just over 3 turns out and the idle screw about a quarter turn from being all the way in. This is the only way it will idle once it's warm.
I rebuilt the carb last night, but i'm thinking it needs a leaner pilot jet. What's your opinion? Should I jump 2 sizes to get more adjustablilty? Is that even the problem? I would think if it had a vacuum leak, it would be the opposite.
This is just no fun to ride having to abuse the clutch so much to get rolling. Almost like taking off in second gear all the time.
Once it's rolling it rips! Tons of power thru the bottom and middle of the power band. On a note, I tryed dropping the needle, which hasn't helped.

sounds to me like your rich if you gotta have the idle needle that far in to get it to idle at all,,
the farther the idle need goes in, the farther the slide opens letting more air in, obviously your needing alot of air to keep up with the flow of gas even at idle, so you definatly need to lean it out a little.
what main jet are you running? i'd definatly start stepping down.

You haven't checked?

I've only messed with it a little since we got it.
Supposedly it's a fresh rebuild. Looks to be, although I did notice a little seeping around the head gasket. How would low compression effect idle mixture?
What should it have? I'll check that first thing tomorrow.

Here's the update. I think it's taken care of.
We checked the head bolts and found a couple loose ones, snugged those down. Dropped the pilot jet from a 50 to a 48. Dropped the needle all the way down. Changed from 22" rears to 19" rears. Takes off great now!
Next I want to go up on the main jet, It still seems to be laying down on the top side.

I stand corrected. It ran pretty well for about an hour of riding then things started going heywire again. Didn't want to idle and sometimes would hang way up when you pulled in the clutch. Seems to worsen as the bike gets warmer. Any more suggestions would be great, if not I may try a different carb. I swear it seems like a lean problem when it's warm, but the whole bogging when you take off has got me confused.
I'm going to check for a leaky intake seal and/or head gasket next.
